Tutto il pianeta, da New York a Hong Kong, vive con il fiato sospeso pensando a una sola cosa: la crisi finanziaria e i suoi effetti. Tutti, dal banchiere al cittadino della strada, parlano solo della grande e della piccola economia, quella del Paese e quella personale. Tutti i media dedicano spazi giganteschi e commenti preoccupati alla nuova Depressione americana che sta sbarcando a casa nostra.

E mentre tutti sono aggrappati ai percorsi altalenanti del dollaro, delle azioni, delle Borse, del petrolio… il Papa cosa fa? Dice che «il denaro è nulla». Dice che «i soldi spariscono, solo la parola di Dio è solida». Dice che successo, carriera, patrimoni, tutto passerà, tranne la Parola di Dio. Apparentemente un richiamo quasi «banale» nella sua semplicità. In realtà, fatto in questo contesto drammatico e in un modo così diretto, una vero terremoto per le coscienze, e non solo quelle cristiane. Comunque, un monito su cui riflettere. Chiedendo aiuto a due intellettuali che, sul tema, hanno avuto modo di studiare e meditare a lungo.

Massimo Fini: “Sangue infetto di un corpo morente”

Due kalashnikov? «Sì, per difendersi dagli assalitori, da chi batterà le campagne in cerca di cibo».

Dieci anni fa, quando Massimo Fini diede alle stampe Il denaro, sterco del demonio (Marsilio) sapeva già come sarebbe andata a finire. Vaticinando il disastro, e dando pollice verso al nostro sistema partorito dalla rivoluzione industriale, parlò di Big Bang. «Il denaro, nella sua estrema essenza, è futuro, – scrisse -. È rappresentazione del futuro, scommessa sul futuro, rilancio inesausto sul futuro, simulazione del futuro a uso del presente. L’impressione è che, per quanto veloci si vada, anzi proprio in ragione di ciò, questo futuro orgiastico arretri costantemente davanti a noi. O, forse, in un moto circolare, niciano, einsteiniano, proprio del denaro, ci sta arrivando alle spalle gravi dell’immenso debito di cui l’abbiamo caricato».

Oggi, leggendo i giornali e guardando il Papa dire che «i soldi sono niente» gli viene in mente il crollo dell’Impero Romano. Una catastrofe, un cataclisma epocale dal quale la gente, «non potendo mangiarsi il cemento delle città, o le fabbriche, o le automobili, cercherà di tornare verso il mondo rurale, quello dell’autoproduzione, del baratto».

Quanto ci vorrà perché l’umanità, gabbata dai futures e dai subprime si metta in marcia verso l’agro romano, o quello umbro, o verso le dolci colline della Carolina del Sud? «Questo non lo sa nessuno. Ma se accadesse già fra una decina d’anni, io non mi stupirei».

Torneremo a dare valore a una mucca. «Almeno quella ti dà latte, vitelli, bistecche. Il denaro invece è davvero nulla, come dice tardivamente il Papa. Ma lui ne fa una questione di tipo morale, sulla quale sono d’accordo. Però non è solo questo. C’è anche un aspetto, per così dire, esistenziale. Nel senso che il denaro ha condizionato, stravolgendola, anche la nostra esistenza. Il denaro è una convenzione, un’astrazione che si basa sulla fiducia che gli uomini hanno in esso».

Una specie di gioco perverso… «Un gioco cominciato quando il denaro ha smesso di essere uno strumento per evitare le triangolazioni del baratto ed è diventato a sua volta una merce. E su una merce virtuale, naturalmente, si innesta ogni tipo di manipolazione».

Anche stavolta, naturalmente, chi è rimasto con il cerino in mano sono i risparmiatori, i soliti fessi ai quali si chiede ogni volta di pagare il conto finale. «Il paradosso stupefacente è che i risparmiatori, avendo poco denaro, finanziano attraverso le banche i ricchi, perché diventino sempre più ricchi. Temendo l’incertezza del futuro, trattengono il denaro senza capire che a essere diventato precario non è il futuro, ma il denaro stesso».

Non è un caso, forse, che l’Europa preindustriale, il mondo tradizionale, contadino, osteggiò l’immissione del denaro nella società che si era venuta sviluppando fin lì. «Non è un caso no. È il denaro che fa saltare il banco delle società preindustriali. Accadde così anche in Africa, quando i colonialisti imposero il pagamento delle tasse a un mondo contadino che fino ad allora aveva vissuto di baratto e di autoproduzione. Mettere una tassa su ogni capanna voleva dire costringere i contadini a produrre un surplus da vendere per pagare le tasse, farli entrare nel gioco del denaro».

Tu dici che il denaro è futuro. Ma poi dici che questo futuro è inesistente. Viene voglia di spararsi. «Eppure è così. Ti faccio un esempio. Se tu hai mille euro coltivi l’aspettativa che presentando questa somma a qualcuno, egli ti darà qualcosa in cambio. È una proiezione in avanti. Ora, quanto più il denaro aumenta, tanto più avanti si sposta il futuro. Vuol dire che abbiamo già ipotecato epoche talmente lontane da avere reso il denaro inesistente».

Fino a quando ha valore la promessa del denaro? «Fino a quando la collettività ci crede».

Questa storia dei governi di immettere miliardi di dollari e di euro nel sistema ha del demenziale. È come se tu fossi in debito con me di 100 euro e io te ne prestassi altrettanti per consentirti di restituirmeli. «Un gioco, appunto. In fondo al quale c’è la bancarotta, l’insolvenza. Ma stavolta non sarà come nel ’29, in America. Il mondo allora non era così integrato, così globalizzato. Ora, se crolla il sistema, si salveranno solo gli indigeni delle Andamane, che vivono di caccia e di pesca».

Tu magari esageri. Però lo scenario non è allegro. «Io non credo di esagerare quando dico che gli scenari immaginabili sono devastanti. È la logica interna del sistema che me lo fa pensare. Il sistema si regge sulla crescita esponenziale, dimenticando che una logica simile esiste in matematica, non in natura. Ma siamo vicini al punto di non ritorno. Alla fine, quando si saranno saturati anche mercati economicamente modesti come l’Afghanistan, il sistema imploderà».

Ci potevano salvare la Cina, l’India, grandi civiltà culturalmente lontane dal modello occidentale. Ma abbiamo finito per risucchiarle nel sistema. «Ecco perché la globalizzazione, ovvero l’essersi affidati a un unico modello è idiota. Ogni macchina sofisticata ha almeno due motori. Qui il motore è solo uno. Sicché, se il modello è sbagliato, visto che è globale, crolla tutto insieme. Globalmente, diremmo».

Dario Antiseri: “È la linfa vitale di un mondo libero”

Dario AntiseriuntitledEra tanto tempo fa, un giorno d’autunno del 1987. Il botto, disse un amico, si è sentito fino a Alpha Centaury. Stava parlando del crollo di Wall Street. Cinquecento punti in un solo giorno. In fumo. Gli anni ’80 scivolavano in fretta, portandosi via i tuoi vent’anni, l’ottimismo e forse una fetta di futuro. Quel giorno il professore raccontò la favola delle api. Dario Antiseri cominciò a parlare di Bernard de Mandeville, il medico di Rotterdam dei vizi privati e delle pubbliche virtù. La sua storia è del 1729. «C’era un alveare ricco e sfarzoso, dove la vanità creava occupazione. L’invidia faceva fiorire arti e industria. Le stravaganze nel mangiare, la sontuosità nel vestiario e nel mobilio costituivano la parte migliore del commercio. Le leggi cambiavano come le mode». Poi un giorno ci fu una rivoluzione moralista. Niente lusso. Niente più vizi. Basta guerre. Tutti uguali, senza più ricchi e poveri. «I palazzi incantevoli, i cui muri, simili alle mura di Tebe, erano stati elevati con armonia musicale, divennero deserti». Fu la fine. L’alveare senza vizi sprofondò nella miseria. L’idea di costruire paradisi in terra porta all’inferno. Antiseri ci disse questo. Due anni dopo cadde il Muro di Berlino. Ma forse fu solo un caso.

È passato tanto tempo. Il professore ha appena scritto un saggio con Giulio Giorello sulla Libertà, un manifesto per credenti e non credenti (Bompiani). Laici e cattolici spesso fanno a botte.

Ricorda quella lezione, professore? «Come fosse ieri. Anche perché da allora l’ho fatta un’altra ventina di volte».

Era il 1987. Ora di nuovo la finanza va a picco. Bisogna stringere la cinghia. E c’è chi predica contro il denaro… «Stai per dire una bestemmia».

No, professore, si sbaglia. «Non stai parlando del Papa? Se è così bisogna chiarire subito una cosa».

Quale? «Benedetto XVI non ha fatto l’elogio del pauperismo. Ha detto di non far diventare i soldi un valore assoluto. Il denaro non è Dio. Il denaro passa, si perde, va via. E quando questo accade non ti resta nulla. I soldi sono nulla. Dio è un’altra cosa. È eterno. E resta. Mi sembra un discorso pieno di buon senso. Il cristiano non può riconoscere un altro assoluto. Ricordi la lettera di Plinio il giovane a Traiano?».

No. «Plinio si rivolge all’imperatore per un consiglio. Come devo trattare i cristiani del Ponto e della Bitinia? E spiega quello che ha fatto finora: uccidere tutti quelli che non venerano la statua dell’imperatore. Traiano è come il denaro. Il cristiano può convivere con lui solo se non pretende di elevarsi a Dio. È un fatto importante. È l’uomo che si riconosce come individuo davanti all’assolutismo dello Stato. È una rivoluzione libertaria».

Ratzinger considera il capitalismo come Traiano? «No, perché il capitalismo non è Traiano. E se lo diventa non è più tale. Il capitalismo non ha mai preteso di elevarsi a Dio. Non punta al paradiso in terra. È questa la sua forza. Non è un’utopia».

Ma il denaro resta lo sterco di Satana. «Ma va! Il cristianesimo non ha mai detto che il denaro è il male. Il denaro è utile. Il buon samaritano soccorre l’uomo depredato dai briganti. Versa olio e vino sulle sue ferite. Lo porta a mangiare in una locanda. Il giorno dopo, estrae due denari e li dà all’albergatore, dicendo: abbi cura di lui e ciò che spenderai in più, te lo rifonderò al mio ritorno. Come vedi anche Cristo sa che i soldi servono. Ma non sono tutto».

Molti sono convinti che la finanza allegra mostri la debolezza del libero mercato. Dove tutto si aggiusta. Dicono: è la fine di un mito. «Sbagliano. E poi non è un mito. Il mercato si limita a indicare, e punire, gli errori del sistema. È un discorso vecchio. Il capitalismo non può fare a meno dell’etica. Attenzione, però, l’etica non ha nulla a che fare con il pauperismo. La moralità non è sinonimo di povertà. Sono due discorsi completamente diversi. Quando parlo di etica mi riferisco alla responsabilità, al rispetto delle leggi, dei contratti, al senso del dovere, alla libertà. Questi sono i valori di cui è intriso il capitalismo. È la sua carta d’identità. Non bisogna neppure esagerare con il pessimismo. Il rischio è sempre quello di guardare alle crisi con occhio apocalittico. Una sorta di fine del mondo, che divide i buoni dai cattivi e giudica vivi e morti. Le crisi possono essere più o meno gravi, ma sono come una scopa del sistema. Eliminano le scorie. Sono un segnale d’allarme, come la febbre. Indicano che qualcosa non va».

Ma la favola delle api? «Cioè?»

L’unico modo per superare la crisi è continuare a spendere. «A produrre. Non dobbiamo arrenderci. È chiaro che se uno produce si aspetta che qualcun altro spenda. Ma il significato etico è diverso. Produrre significa far fruttare i nostri talenti. Rimboccarsi le maniche, ingegnarsi a trovare soluzioni innovative, superare gli ostacoli con la creatività. È questo il fascino del capitalismo, la sua forza creatrice, demiurgica. È l’uomo che si batte per superare le difficoltà. Anche qui posso citarti una parabola, cristiana».

Quella dei talenti? «Già. Il dovere cristiano di far fruttare i doni che Dio ti ha dato. Non è roba da poco».

Professore, lo sa che l’idea di un cattolico liberale ancora suona strana. Soprattutto di questi tempi, con la Chiesa che predica e i liberali che sbuffano. «Tocqueville, Rosmini, Einaudi, Roepke. Bastano quattro nomi. Tutti cattolici. Negami che sono liberali».
