GIAPPONE: beatificati i primi martiri in terra giapponese

LA PRIMA BEATIFICAZIONE SUL SUOLO GIAPPONESE

Il 24 novembre 2007 si è celebrata Nagasaki la beatificazione, la prima in terra giapponese, di 188 nipponici – sacerdoti, religiose e laici – uccisi tra il 1603 e il 1639 a causa della loro fede cattolica, che si aggiungono ai 42 santi e ai 395 beati – tutti martiri – già elevati agli altari dai precedenti pontefici.


Tra i nuovi beati anche il padre gesuita Pietro Kibe Kasui, ordinato sacerdote a Roma nel 1620 (ove era giunto dall’esilio di Macao), e gesuita, a Lisbona, nel 1622. Nel 1614 il governo giapponese aveva costretto i cattolici ad andare in esilio (aveva già espulso i missionari stranieri nel 1587), e chiuso le chiese del Paese. All’epoca i cattolici in Giappone erano circa 300.000, evangelizzati dai gesuiti, con san Francesco Saverio, e dai francescani.
Tornato in Giappone, Kasui viene catturato nel 1639 a Sendai insieme ad altri due sacerdoti. Interrogato e torturato per dieci giorni, dopo essersi rifiutato di abiurare, sarà martirizzato a Edo (attuale Tokyo) nel luglio 1639. Tra gli altri martiri: Michele Kusurya, detto il “buon samaritano di Nagasaki”, ucciso come molti, legato al palo e arso vivo; Nicola Keian Fukunaga, gettato in fondo a un pozzo di fango. Altri furono inchiodati su croci o tagliati a pezzi, con crudeltà che non risparmiavano donne e bambini. Oltre che dalle uccisioni, la comunità cattolica fu decimata dalle apostasie di quanti abiuravano per timore. Eppure non fu annientata: sopravvive in clandestinità fino all’arrivo, due secoli dopo, di un regime più aperto.
Come ricorda il card. Giacomo Biffi «a Nagasaki fin dal secolo XVI era sorta la prima consistente comunità cattolica del Giappone. A Nagasaki il 5 febbraio 1597 avevano dato la vita per Cristo trentasei martiri (sei missionari francescani, tre gesuiti giapponesi, ventisette laici), canonizzati da Pio IX nel 1862. Quando riprende la persecuzione nel 1637 vengono uccisi addirittura trentacinquemila cristiani. Poi la giovane comunità vive, per così dire, nelle catacombe, separata dal resto della cattolicità e senza sacerdoti; ma non si estingue».
«Nel 1865 – prosegue il card. Biffi – il padre Petitjean scopre questa “Chiesa clandestina”, che si fa da lui riconoscere dopo essersi accertata che egli è celibe, che è devoto di Maria e obbedisce al Papa di Roma; e così la vita sacramentale può riprendere regolarmente. Nel 1889 è proclamata in Giappone la piena libertà religiosa, e tutto rifiorisce. Il 15 giugno 1891 viene eretta canonicamente la diocesi di Nagasaki, che nel 1927 accoglie come pastore monsignor Hayasaka, che è il primo vescovo giapponese ed è consacrato personalmente da Pio XI».
Poiché la maggior parte dei cattolici giapponesi era di Nagasaki, Biffi si chiede «come mai per la seconda ecatombe è stata scelta, tra tutte, proprio la città del Giappone dove il cattolicesimo, oltre ad avere la storia più gloriosa, era anche più diffuso e affermato». In effetti, tra le vittime della bomba atomica su Nagasaki scomparvero in un sol giorno i due terzi della vivace comunità cattolica giapponese. Una comunità quasi azzerata con la violenza per due volte in tre secoli.

Gli ultimi dati ufficiali, del 2004, stimano in poco più di mezzo milione i giapponesi di fede cattolica. Pochi in rapporto a una popolazione di 126 milioni. Ma rispettati e influenti, anche grazie a una fitta rete di loro scuole e università. Inoltre, se ai giapponesi di nascita si sommano gli immigrati da altri Paesi dell’Asia, il numero dei cattolici raddoppia. Un rapporto del 2005 della Commissione per i migranti della Conferenza Episcopale calcola che il totale dei cattolici abbia di recente superato il milione, per la prima volta nella storia del Giappone.

Giappone lNAGASAKI CITTA’ DELL’ATOMICA E DEI MARTIRI CRISTIANI

Sono 188, di quattro secoli fa, e saranno beatificati tra un anno. Nella stessa città in cui nel 1945 furono uccisi in un sol giorno i due terzi dei cattolici del Giappone. Fu questa una scelta deliberata?

ROMA, 30 ottobre 2007 – Nelle memorie del cardinale Giacomo Biffi da oggi in vendita nelle librerie, c’è un passaggio con il finale in sospeso, che riguarda il Giappone. È là dove Biffi ricorda il forte impatto che ebbe su di lui nel 1945 la notizia delle bombe atomiche sganciate dagli Stati Uniti il 6 agosto su Hiroshima e il 9 agosto su Nagasaki.

Scrive:
“Di Nagasaki avevo già sentito parlare. L’avevo ripetutamente incontrata nel ‘Manuale di storia delle missioni cattoliche’ di Giuseppe Schmidlin, tre volumi pubblicati a Milano nel 1929. A Nagasaki fin dal secolo XVI era sorta la prima consistente comunità cattolica del Giappone. A Nagasaki il 5 febbraio 1597 avevano dato la vita per Cristo trentasei martiri (sei missionari francescani, tre gesuiti giapponesi, ventisette laici), canonizzati da Pio IX nel 1862. Quando riprende la persecuzione nel 1637 vengono uccisi addirittura trentacinquemila cristiani. Dallo Schmidlin veniamo a sapere che nel 1929 di 94.096 cattolici nipponici ben 63.698 sono di Nagasaki“.


Premesso questo, il cardinale Biffi conclude con una domanda inquietante:

“Possiamo ben supporre che le bombe atomiche non siano state buttate a casaccio. La domanda è quindi inevitabile: come mai per la seconda ecatombe è stata scelta, tra tutte, proprio la città del Giappone dove il cattolicesimo, oltre ad avere la storia più gloriosa, era anche più diffuso e affermato?“.

In effetti, tra le vittime della bomba atomica su Nagasaki scomparvero in un sol giorno i due terzi della piccola ma vivace comunità cattolica giapponese. Una comunità quasi azzerata con la violenza per due volte in tre secoli.

Nel 1945 lo fu per un atto di guerra misteriosamente concentratosi su di essa. Tre secoli prima per una terribile persecuzione molto simile a quella dell’impero romano contro i primi cristiani, con epicentro sempre Nagasaki e la sua “collina dei martiri”.

Eppure, da entrambe queste tragedie la comunità cattolica giapponese ha saputo risorgere. Dopo la persecuzione del Seicento, dei cristiani mantennero viva la fede trasmettendola dai genitori ai figli per due secoli, pur privi di vescovi, preti e sacramenti. Si racconta che il venerdì santo del 1865 ben diecimila di questi “kakure kirisitan”, cristiani nascosti, sbucarono dai villaggi e si presentarono a Nagasaki agli stupiti missionari che avevano da poco riavuto accesso in Giappone.

E anche dopo la seconda ecatombe di Nagasaki, quella del 1945, la Chiesa cattolica è rinata, in Giappone. Gli ultimi dati ufficiali, del 2004, stimano in poco più di mezzo milione i giapponesi di fede cattolica. Pochi in rapporto a una popolazione di 126 milioni. Su questo sfondo prende una luce nuova un decreto autorizzato il 1 giugno 2007 da Benedetto XVI: la beatificazione di 188 martiri del Giappone, che si aggiungono ai 42 santi e ai 395 beati – tutti martiri – già elevati agli altari dai precedenti papi. La beatificazione – la prima mai tenuta in Giappone – sarà celebrata il 24 novembre del 2008 proprio a Nagasaki dal prefetto della congregazione delle cause dei santi, cardinale José Saraiva Martins, come inviato speciale di Benedetto XVI. I 188 martiri giapponesi che saranno beatificati l’anno prossimo sono classificati nelle carte del processo canonico come “padre Kibe e i suoi 187 compagni”. Sono stati uccisi a causa della loro fede tra il 1603 e il 1639.

Pietro Kibe Kasui nacque nel 1587, nell’anno in cui il maresciallo della corona a Nagasaki, lo shogun Hideyoshi, emise un editto che ingiungeva ai missionari stranieri di lasciare il paese. Dieci anni dopo cominciarono le persecuzioni. A quell’epoca in Giappone si contavano circa 300 mila cattolici, evangelizzati prima dai gesuiti, con san Francesco Saverio, e poi anche dai francescani. Nel febbraio 1614 un altro editto impose la chiusura delle chiese cattoliche e il confinamento a Nagasaki di tutti i sacerdoti rimasti, stranieri e locali.

Nel novembre dello stesso anno i sacerdoti e i laici che guidavano le comunità furono costretti ad andare in esilio. Kibe riparò prima a Macao e poi a Roma. Fu ordinato sacerdote il 15 novembre 1620 e, dopo aver completato il noviziato a Lisbona, pronunciò i primi voti da gesuita il 6 giugno 1622. Tornato in Giappone fra i cattolici sottoposti a crudele persecuzione, nel 1639 fu catturato a Sendai assieme ad altri due sacerdoti. Torturato per dieci giorni di fila, rifiutò di abiurare. E fu martirizzato a Edo, l’attuale Tokyo. Uno dei suoi 187 compagni di martirio, per la maggior parte laici, fu Michele Kusurya, detto il “buon samaritano di Nagasaki”. Salì la “collina dei martiri”, poco fuori la città, cantando dei salmi. Morì, come molti, legato al palo e bruciato a fuoco lento.

Un altro dei prossimi beati fu Nicola Keian Fukunaga. Morì gettato in fondo a un pozzo di fango, dove fino all’ultimo pregò a voce alta, chiedendo perdono “per non aver portato Cristo a tutti i giapponesi, a cominciare dallo shogun”.

Altri martiri furono uccisi inchiodati su croci o tagliati a pezzi, con inaudite crudeltà che non risparmiavano donne e bambini. Oltre che dalle uccisioni, la comunità cattolica fu falcidiata dalle apostasie di quelli che abiuravano per paura. Eppure non fu annientata. Una parte si celò nella clandestinità e conservò la fede fino all’arrivo, due secoli dopo, di un regime più libero. Lo scorso settembre la diocesi di Takamatsu ha dedicato un simposio a un altro ancora dei 188 martiri che saranno beatificati nel 2008, il gesuita Diego Ryosetsu Yuki, discendente di una famiglia di shogun.

Uno dei relatori, il professor Shinzo Kawamura della Università Sophia dei gesuiti di Tokyo, ha mostrato che la forza indomita con cui tanti cattolici di quell’epoca resistettero alle torture e affrontarono il martirio proveniva anche dallo spirito comunitario con cui essi si sostenevano a vicenda, nella fede. In parte avevano preso come modello le comunità buddiste di Jodo Shinshu, della Terra Pura. “Furono le kumi, le comunità dei kirisitan, dei cristiani, il terreno sul quale fiorirono i 188 martiri.

La Chiesa di quell’epoca in Giappone era una vera Chiesa di popolo”.

SANTA MESSA CON BATTESIMI E CRESIME E PER LA COMMEMORAZIONE DEI MARTIRI

Nagasaki (Giappone), 26 febbraio 1981

Carissimi, tutti e particolarmente voi, miei fratelli e sorelle che avete appena ricevuto i sacramenti del Battesimo e della Confermazione.

1. Ora che abbiamo ascoltato il passo del Vangelo di san Matteo è facile per tutti noi salire con Gesù sulla cima del vicino Nishizaka, che i primi cristiani del Giappone chiamarono la “collina santa” o “collina dei Martiri”. Potremmo anche chiamarlo il Monte delle Beatitudini di Nagasaki.

Contempliamo la figura del Maestro che chiamò a sé tanti discepoli di questa città, sede della Madre Chiesa del Giappone. Gesù parla con amore specialmente ai molti seguaci che si sono radunati là vicino alla sua Croce. I ventisei santi protomartiri, i duecentocinque martiri beatificati da Pio IX, e i loro più che quattromila compagni, il cui martirio è accuratamente documentato (cf. J. Laures, The Catholic Church in Japan, Tokio [1954], pp. 178-179). Questa gloriosa moltitudine, come quella dei cristiani dei primi secoli, ha ricevuto un fresco riconoscimento dalla Chiesa alcuni giorni fa, a Manila, nella cerimonia di beatificazione di altri sedici martiri. Questi martiri patirono a Nishizaka negli anni 10, 11 e 14 dell’era Kwanei, che corrisponde agli anni 1633, 1634 e 1637 del calendario cristiano che fu il periodo contrassegnato dall’editto Sakoku, promulgato dallo Shogun Tokugawa Iyemitsu.

I nuovi Beati, come tutti coloro che subirono il martirio, sono proclamati “beati” da Gesù. Perché hanno sofferto per amore della giustizia (cf. Mt 5,10), una giustizia che perfeziona quella solamente umana. È la giustizia che Cristo predicò nel Discorso della Montagna, che è modello di vita per coloro che desiderano imitare il Padre che è nei cieli (cf. Mt 5,7). Prima della loro morte, come tutti coloro che sono giusti agli occhi di Dio, essi erano poveri di spirito, miti, tolleranti, assetati di giustizia, misericordiosi, puri di cuore; erano operatori di pace.

2. In una parola erano portatori e araldi di un duplice comandamento d’amore, come dichiarò Giordano Ansalone al suo processo: “Io vengo soprattutto per questo motivo, ed è la stessa cosa che Cristo mio Re desidera: il motivo che ci accomuna è l’amore che Lui e io abbiamo per voi, in conformità con la legge dei cristiani che è basata totalmente sull’amore” (Positio super Martyrio, Roma [1979], p. 334). Ed è esattamente in questa prospettiva, e con questi sentimenti di amore che i sedici nuovi beati sentirono di essere giapponesi con i giapponesi, cristiani con i cristiani, fratelli con i fratelli.

L’amore è la missione evangelica che motivò il martirio li riunì insieme da cinque nazionalità: il loro gruppo era composto non solo di nove giapponesi, dell’isola di Kyushu e dell’antica capitale Kyoto, ma anche di quattro spagnoli, un francese, un italiano e un filippino. Guillaume Courtet e Lorenzo Ruiz infatti furono i primi e gli unici, a venire dalla Francia e dalle Filippine e a morire come martiri.

Lo stesso impulso d’amore univa l’umile e il grande, i tredici membri della Famiglia di san Domenico, e gli altri tre devoti laici. Ascoltiamo una delle loro testimonianze: “Il dono di Dio che apprezzo di più, è quello di avermi inviato in questo Paese in compagnia di così numerosi e grandi suoi servitori” (Positio, super Martyrio, p. 216). Così scrisse Lucas Alonso del Espíritu Santo, che con Domingo Ibañez de Erquicia predicò il Vangelo per dieci anni, arrivando fino alla lontana isola di Honshu. Ugualmente degni di ammirazione sono Jacopo Kyuhei Tomonaga e Tomás Hioji Rokuzayemon, missionari a Formosa e nell’isola di Kyushu.

La nostra ammirazione anche a Vicente Shiwozuka e Lazaro di Kyoto che, quantunque esiliati in conseguenza dell’Editto del 1614, nel 1636 decisero di ritornare nella loro terra natale allo scopo di vivere là, fino alla sua finale consumazione, quel battesimo che vi avevano ricevuto. Noi pensiamo anche a Magdalena di Nagasaki, la forte collaboratrice dei padri agostiniani e domenicani, e a Marina di Omura, che è venerata dalle donne del Giappone, come avvocata della fortezza, con l’appellativo biblico di “donna forte” (cf. Positio super Martyrio, p. 331).

3. L’amore generoso e le zelanti attività dei Martiri tutte si spiegano con la forza dello Spirito Santo che lavorava in loro e li induceva ad obbedire ai comandamenti del sacro libro del Siracide (cf. Sir 2,1-18) che abbiamo ascoltato nella prima lettura di questa messa. Allora noi possiamo capire pienamente quello che dissero gli interpreti alla corte di Nagasaki ai due Bugyo (giudici): “Signori, dire a costoro di negare la propria fede è come una medicina data ad un uomo morente che lo fa rivivere; di fatto essi riprendono vita e rispondono con rinnovato vigore” (cf. Positio super Martyrio, p. 414). 4.

L’atteggiamento da loro assunto come figli della Chiesa operanti in una nazione con una differente religione, era ispirata dalle parole di san Pietro nella seconda lettura di questa Messa: desideravano che i loro fratelli vedessero le loro buone opere per giungere a “glorificare Dio nel giorno del giudizio” (1Pt 2,12). Questa apostolica indicazione ha costituito il classico atteggiamento degli antichi martiri al tempo dell’impero Romano. Non meno significativo, fu il genere di vita che essi condussero, nel contesto sociale e politico del loro tempo, poiché abbracciarono il Vangelo “non soltanto per mezzo della parola ma anche con potenza e con Spirito Santo e con profonda convinzione” (1Ts 1,5). Così essi divennero per tutti un esempio di fedeltà a Cristo il cui ritorno essi attendevano in speranza e amore.

D’altro canto dobbiamo ricordare che l’Editto promulgato dallo Shogun Tokugawa Iyeyasu, nel 1614, anno 17 dell’Era Keicho, stabiliva: “Il Giappone è una terra di origine divina” (cf. Positio super Martyrio, p. 49).I cristiani di allora e di oggi possono meglio interpretare questa affermazione alla scuola del Verbo Incarnato, per mezzo del quale tutte le cose sono state create, che venne nel mondo, luce vera nata dal Padre, per illuminare ogni uomo con la pienezza della Grazia e della Verità (cf. Gv 1,1-18).

5. Con quanta speranza desideravo visitare il Giappone a motivo della recente beatificazione! Esso è un Paese che da più di un secolo gode della libertà religiosa elargita dall’imperatore Meiji. Sono venuto qui come Vescovo di Roma, un secolo dopo la riapertura delle frontiere del Giappone al messaggio cristiano. Sono venuto a Nagasaki come pellegrino. Qui, i fedeli di cento anni fa, i cui antenati dei due secoli precedenti, hanno conservato segretamente la fede dei martiri, perseverarono con la forza conferita loro dal Vangelo. Per grazia di Dio i cristiani hanno meditato sul Vangelo per mezzo dei misteri del Rosario. Sapevano che c’era un uomo molto lontano da loro chiamato Papa. Oggi egli viene per rendere omaggio alla tradizione dei cristiani di Nagasaki e per dire personalmente ai loro discendenti che egli li ama nel cuore di Cristo Gesù.

Nella Cattedrale di Urakami, dedicata a Maria Immacolata, sublime modello della Chiesa, ho osservato la nuova Chiesa giapponese, che si erge davanti al mondo come segno della nuova Gerusalemme adornata in abbigliamento festivo (cf. Ap 21,24). Una Chiesa i cui membri raggiungono i 400.000, pressappoco lo stesso numero dei cristiani del suo primo secolo (1549-1640). E con immensa gioia do il benvenuto entro la comunione della Chiesa ai nuovi cristiani che Cristo stesso ha chiamato in questo giorno “alla sua ammirabile luce” (1Pt 2,9).

Questo legame fra il passato e il presente è il frutto della benedizione di Dio, della materna assistenza della Beata Vergine e dell’intercessione di innumerevoli testimoni del Vangelo. È una garanzia per un futuro ancora più glorioso che si potrebbe paragonare al sole, che nel suo sorgere quotidiano effonde la prima luce illuminando e ravvivando questa bellissima terra spesso bianca di neve, o rosa di ciliegi in fiore e di loti. La sua antica religione shintoista indica la via verso la divinità; per noi cristiani la via è già stata tracciata da Cristo stesso che è Dio da Dio, luce da luce, Dio vero da Dio vero.

È Lui Gesù Cristo e la sua grazia che noi lodiamo e glorifichiamo in questi nuovi gloriosi martiri di Nagasaki.

GIAPPONE Una ascoltatrice di Hiroshima viene a sapere della morte del card. Hamao e ci invia un pezzo

Dopo aver ascoltato dal Radiogiornale delle 14 di oggi la notizia della morte del cardinale giapponese Fumio Hamao, una ascoltatrice ci ha inviato il pezzo che segue. Naturalmente l’ascoltatrice è diventata, eo ipso, una nostra corrispondente da Hiroshima (MANCINI)

Ho appreso ore fa dalla Radio Vaticana , la scomparsa del Cardinale giapponese. La sorpresa è aumentata dal fatto che proprio a quell`ora, quando lo annunciavate, si stava svolgendo ad Hiroshima la prima assoluta dell`opera “Agnes”, un dramma in musica che narra la storia dei primi martiri cristiani giapponesi dopo la grande evangelizzazione di San Francesco Saverio.

Agnes era il nome di battesimo della moglie del Samurai Takeda Goshyoe Simone, della città di Yatsushiro, città che ha dato 11 dei 188 martiri giapponesi di cui Papa Benedetto XVI ha permesso l`annuncio della vicina beatificazione.

L`opera e` tratta da un lavoro teatrale dell`italiano Alfonso Varano da Camerino, scritto nel 1783. Nel 2003 ne abbiamo iniziato la traduzione in giapponese, nel 2004 è stata musicata da un compositore cattolico di Hiroshima, il maestro Matsumoto Keiji, e poi diretta dal prof. Francesco Yoichiro Uchida, dell`Universita` Musicale di Elisabeth di Hiroshima, universita` voluta dai Padri Gesuiti come aiuto alla ripresa alla vita dopo gli orrori della seconda Guerra mondiale.

Vorrei notare come tra i cantanti , coristi, narratori, vi fosse la contemporanea presenza di protestanti, cattolici, buddisti e shintoisti, tutti uniti nella collaborazione…per il buon esito di dire agli altri una storia vera.

Questo fa ricordare ancora di più il sano ottimismo cristiano che soleva schizzare da tutti i pori dell`indimenticabile Cardinale Hamao.

Roma (AsiaNews) – La distribuzione degli aiuti materiali e sostegno psicologico alle vittime dello tsunami nel sudest asiatico sono stati al centro dell’incontro di questa mattina  tra i membri del Pontificio Consiglio dei Migranti e Itineranti e i responsabili internazionali dell’Apostolato del mare per la pesca. Il card. Fumio Hamao, presidente del Pontificio Consiglio, ha dichiarato ad AsiaNews che “per i soccorsi c’è molto denaro a disposizione e che ora si sta studiando come distribuirlo nel modo più efficace possibile”. Il cardinale ha spiegato che per garantire una corretta gestione delle donazioni, queste “sono affidate alle diocesi e ai centri Caritas dei paesi colpiti”. Con la Caritas internationalis, ha detto il card. Hamao – la Chiesa  ha creato una “concreta rete di collaborazione”; alcuni membri dell’organizzazione cattolica sono intervenuti alla riunione odierna.

Il  presidente del dicastero vaticano ha detto che nella riunione non sono emersi episodi di difficoltà negli interventi: “Il lavoro della Chiesa a favore delle vittime nelle zone colpite dallo tsunami non sta incontrando nessun tipo di ostacolo”. È forte, anzi, la “collaborazione con altre comunità di religioni differenti”. Il card. Hamao ha sottolineato che “l’Apostolato del mare e il Consiglio dei Migranti (in cui esso rientra) “nascono con una vocazione ecumenica e sono abituati e propensi al lavoro con persone di altre confessioni, specialmente in Asia”.

L’intervento a lungo termine programmato dalla Chiesa, sarà concentrato sui pescatori, la categoria più danneggiata dal disastro (solo in Indonesia si sono perse il 60% delle imbarcazioni), ma non solo. “Importante – ha detto il card. Hamao – sarà offrire un sostegno psicologico soprattutto ai bambini”. Come negli aiuti economici, anche in questo delicato settore l’attenzione della Chiesa sarà strutturare programmi il più possibile mirati. “Per organizzare aiuti specifici per i giovani – ha detto il cardinale –  consulteremo le varie parrocchie e sentiremo i bisogni reali”.

Il card. Hamao ha aggiunto che durante la riunione i partecipanti si sono soffermati sul valore positivo della “solidarietà globalizzata” di cui l’Asia è stata oggetto, ma allo stesso tempo hanno evidenziato “la necessità di ricordare i bisogni urgenti di altre paesi, tra i quali Sudan e Rwanda”.

La riunione, che si chiuderà oggi nel tardo pomeriggio, segue quella dei coordinatori regionali dell’Apostolato del mare (31 gennaio – 1 febbraio) giunti a Roma da tutto il mondo per l’annuale appuntamento, durante il quale si fa il punto della situazione pastorale e si programmano le attività comuni. Tra di essi i rappresentanti di India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailandia, Malaysia e Bangladesh.

L’Apostolato del mare è presente in 116 nazioni e impegna oltre 200 sacerdoti. (MA)

Il Cardinale Stephen Fumio Hamao, Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio della Pastorale per i Migranti e gli Itineranti, è nato a T?ky? (Giappone) il 9 marzo 1930. Ha studiato al Collegio Urbano a Roma (1951-1958) e si è laureato in Diritto Canonico alla Pontificia Università Gregoriana a Roma (1962).
Ordinato sacerdote il 21 dicembre 1957, è stato Cappellano degli Studenti Cattolici universitari nell’Arcidiocesi di T?ky? (1967-1970), prima di essere eletto alla Sede titolare di Oreto e nominato Vescovo ausiliare di T?ky? il 5 febbraio 1970.
Ricevuta l’ordinazione episcopale il 29 aprile dello stesso anno, ha svolto l’ufficio di Ausiliare fino al 30 ottobre 1979, quando è stato nominato Vescovo di Yokohama. Durante l’episcopato a Yokohama è stato responsabile delle seguenti Commissioni della Conferenza Episcopale del Giappone: Apostolato della Gioventù (1980-1986), Pastorale dei Migranti (1992-1995), Caritas del Giappone (1992-1995), Pastorale dei Rifugiati (1992-1995), Vice-Presidente della Conferenza Episcopale del Giappone (1992-1995); fino a divenirne Presidente dal 1995 al 1998.

Nel contempo è stato anche membro del Consiglio del Sinodo dei Vescovi (1983-1987); responsabile dell’Ufficio per lo Sviluppo Umano della Federazione delle Conferenze Episcopali dell’Asia (Fabc), dal 1986 al 1996; Vice-Presidente della Caritas Internationalis e Presidente della Caritas dell’Asia e dell’Oceania (1989-1996); membro del Pontificio Consiglio della Giustizia e della Pace (1990-1996).

Il 15 giugno 1998 Giovanni Paolo II lo ha nominato Presidente del Pontificio Consiglio della Pastorale per i Migranti e gli Itineranti, elevandolo alla dignità Arcivescovile. Nel contempo il Card. Hamao rinunciava al governo pastorale di Yokohama.

La beatificazione di 188 dei suoi martiri, lunedì 24 novembre a Nagasaki, è un grande momento per la Chiesa cattolica giapponese. La proclamazione da parte del rappresentante di Benedetto XVI, cardinale José Saraiva Martins, della “santità di questi servi di Dio” mette in luce il radicamento della fede cristiana nell’arcipelago da più di quattro secoli. “Questa beatificazione è anche un messaggio molto attuale del coraggio nella fede”, ha dichiarato il cardinale.

È la prima beatificazione in Giappone e la più importante – con la partecipazione attesa di 30 000 persone – mai organizzata in Asia. I “beati” sono dei laici (salvo quattro preti e una suora): individui, ma anche famiglie intere, donne e bambini, martirizzati in sedici luoghi diversi nel paese.

La Chiesa cattolica giapponese conta 42 santi e 205 beati, ma finora si trattava soprattutto di religiosi. “È in seguito al consiglio dato nel 1981 ai vescovi locali da papa Giovanni Paolo II di far conoscere al mondo i primi cristiani giapponesi che i vescovi hanno preso l’iniziativa di raccogliere i documenti storici e di inviare per la prima volta una domanda di beatificazione alla Santa Sede”, ha spiegato monsignor José Saraiva Martins. Le ricerche sono durate ventisei anni. I supplizi di cui sono stati vittime, tra il 1603 ed il 1639, segnano la seconda fase delle persecuzioni.

Erano cominciate al tempo di Hideyoshi, signore della guerra, che unificò il paese. Nel 1597, preoccupato del proselitismo dei missionari arrivati al seguito di Francesco Saverio, sbarcato a Kagoshima (sud) nel 1549, volendo imporre la sua autorità, fa torturare 26 cristiani a Nagasaki. Si contavano allora tra i 300 000 ed i 400 000 cristiani, ricorda Églises d’Asie in un numero speciale sul Giappone (novembre) che tratta, tra gli altri argomenti, delle persecuzioni.

Partita dal sud del paese, l’evangelizzazione aveva raggiunto in pochi decenni il nord della regione di Honshu. Il primo shogun, Tokugawa, ordina nel 1614 il bando dei missionari, percepiti come avanguardia di potenze straniere, e proibisce il cristianesimo. Chiusura del paese, espulsione dei preti e persecuzione sistematica dei fedeli vengono attuati subito dopo. Coloro che rifiutavano di abiurare venivano uccisi: a migliaia furono decapitati, crocifissi o bruciati vivi. Certi conservarono nonostante tutto la fede. Privi di preti, di chiese, di sacramenti, praticarono per due secoli e mezzo un culto segreto.

Dopo l’instaurazione della libertà religiosa (1873), i missionari stranieri tornati in Giappone scoprirono 26 000 discendenti dei “cristiani nascosti”. Certi si reinserirono nella Chiesa; altri restarono fedeli ad un culto trasmesso oralmente e per il quale erano morti i loro antenati ma che, troppo lontano dal dogma, non è riconosciuto da Roma. Ne sono rimaste alcune migliaia nelle isole al largo di Nagasaki, la città più cattolica dell’arcipelago (4,5% della popolazione rispetto a una media nazionale che non supera lo 0,3%). Il cristianesimo è poco diffuso in Giappone. Vi si contano meno di 2 milioni di cristiani, di cui 500 000 cattolici, su 128 milioni di abitanti. Si è diffuso soprattutto nelle classi agiate: il primo ministro, Taro Aso, è cattolico. “Questa beatificazione invita a ravvivare la nostra fede. La nostra Chiesa si è ricostruita con l’aiuto dei missionari. Deve ‘giapponesizzarsi’ di più”, ritiene monsignor Osamu Mizobé, presidente della commissione di preparazione della beatificazione.
