L’EDUCAZIONE CRISTIANA E IL NUOVO UMANESIMO – Flavio Pajer

Sono passati quasi settant’anni da quando Jacques Maritain scriveva negli Stati Uniti d’America e pubblicava in Francia il suo Umanesimo integrale (1936), opera nella quale egli prospettava l’utopia di un rovesciamento dei principi della civiltà occidentale, in quanto „si tratta di arrivare a un primato della qualità sulla quantità, del lavoro sul denaro, dell’umano sul tecnico, della saggezza sulla scienza, della solidarietà sociale sull’egoismo individuale”.

A settant’anni di distanza, dobbiamo purtroppo dire che l’utopia maritainiana si è rivelata davvero tale: solo un’utopia, un sogno. Non solo, ma dovremmo ammettere che – sotto certi aspetti, come quelli etico-valoriali o simbolico-religiosi – quella che lui chiamava „civiltà occidentale” ha conosciuto da allora ad oggi una progressiva estenuazione, per non dire una evidente degenerazione.

Lo stesso anno 1936 usciva L’homme cet inconnu di Alexis Carrel, premio Nobel per la medicina, la cui tesi centrale faceva chiaramente eco al richiamo di Maritain: „la nostra civiltà è disumana perché ignora l’uomo”.

1. Umanesimi nel Novecento occidentale

Ma non si contano le opere letterarie e le analisi filosofiche che lungo tutto il Novecento hanno tentato di individuare lo specifico della condizione umana dalle angolature più svariate e inconciliabili tra loro: dall’ Uomo senza qualità (1930-43) di Robert Musil all’ Uomo a una dimensione (1964) di Herbert Marcuse, dall’ Homo ludens (1938) di Johan Huizinga all’Homo patiens (1984) di Viktor E.Frankl, dall’Homo viator (1945) di Gabriel Marcel all’Uomo planetario (1990) di Ernesto Balducci…e come non citare, in questa nobile terra di Romania, gli importanti studi sull’ homo symbolicus, mythologicus, religiosus del vostro celebre compatriota Mircea Eliade?

Questo grappolo di nomi esemplificativi che ho evocato – ma l’elenco potrebbe continuare a lungo ! – non indica certo un itinerario rettilineo di una teoria dell’uomo contemporaneo, quanto una rete o meglio un labirinto di visioni più o meno parziali e contraddittorie. Un labirinto dove è più facile smarrirsi che trovare una direzione di marcia coerente. D’altra parte, sappiamo che non pochi pensatori si compiacciono nel contrassegnare la condizione umana proprio con i caratteri esistenziali del limite, della debolezza, della ferita. Per esempio, già Freud, in un suo testo del 1917, scriveva che dagli inizi dell’epoca moderna l’umanità s’era vista infliggere tre gravi ferite:

  • la prima, sul piano cosmologico, era il fatto di Copernico che osò dire che la terra era più piccola del sole e che girava introno ad esso;
  • la seconda, biologica, era stata causata da Darwin la cui teoria sembrava aver dato un colpo mortale all’orgoglio umano;
  • la terza ferita, di ordine psicologico, era la psicanalisi, che affermava, nonostante ogni apparenza contraria, che l’uomo non è mai padrone della propria anima.

A queste tre ferite della coscienza moderna, a dir il vero già abbondantemente cicatrizzate, noi uomini post-moderni ne dobbiamo aggiungere diverse altre: per esempio,

  • l’esser divenuti consapevoli della relatività della nostra cultura, anzi della sua mortalità,
  • l’aver perso quella sicurezza prima garantita dai nostri secolari etnocentrismi culturali,
  • l’aver assistito alla fine delle grandi ideologie che a modo loro obbligavano a darsi un’ identità e una appartenenza,
  • l’essere consci che le stesse epistemologie dei saperi sono divenute labili e falsificabili,
  • il sentirci in balìa dei „giochi” non sempre innocenti della globalizzazione,
  • per non parlare dell’incombente e imperversante minaccia del terrorismo transnazionale…

Il sociologo Zigmunt Bauman (La società dell’incertezza, 1999), nel capitolo „Catalogo delle paure postmoderne”, registra la paura dell’incertezza (p.101), anzi parla dell’ambiguità tra la fobia del mutevole e la fobia del definitivo (p.117).

E l’epistemologo Edgar Morin (A’ propos des sept savoirs, 2000) va ancora più avanti quando afferma che „l’acquisizione dell’incertezza è una delle più grandi conquiste della coscienza umana” (p.45) e annovera addirittura l’incertezza (da lui intesa come attitudine e capacità positiva di sottoporre a verifica continua ogni certezza) tra i „sette saperi” che dovrebbero essere insegnati e appresi da tutti nella scuola del futuro (p.41).

Alla base di questo generale clima di incertezza stanno paure planetarie come quella della crisi ecologica, del boom demografico, della tecnocrazia disumanizzante, della onni-invadenza informatica, dello „scontro tra civiltà”, e altre ancora. E comunque un’attesa implicita e confusa di un uomo nuovo si fa strada in questi ultimi anni nella ricerca inquieta di forme sperimentali di religiosità, nel fenomeno vistoso del nomadismo spirituale. Le „filosofie” New Age/Next Age, per esempio, come altre correnti esoteriche e settarie, testimoniano – talora in forme inedite e paradossali, quasi prometeiche – l’ansia dell’avvento di un uomo nuovo.

Le stesse religioni storiche – che da secoli avevano mantenuto la presunzione di indicare all’uomo credente la sua vera natura e vocazione – sembrano entrate oggi nell’era dell’incertezza, della fluidità: sembrano impotenti a trasmettere all’uomo la sua identità ultima. Certi fenomeni di fondamentalismo si spiegano appunto come reazione identitaria all’estenuarsi, reale o apparente, delle certezze di un tempo.ù

Lo stesso cristianesimo – al di là della laboriosa ricomposizione interna dei suoi contenuti dogmatici, etici, ordinamentali – sa che deve fare oggi seriamente i conti con il pluralismo delle religioni. Se fino a ieri, in un’epoca in cui l’epopea missionaria coincideva con la supremazia incontrastata dell’Occidente, le chiese cristiane davano un giudizio piuttosto pessimistico sull’avvenire delle grandi religioni mondiali, oggi la teologia cristiana delle religioni è diventata un posto decisivo di frontiera della teologia contemporanea. Il teologo domenicano Claude Geffré azzarda questo parallelo illuminante:

Come l’ateismo ha potuto essere l’orizzonte in funzione del quale la teologia della seconda metà del secolo XX re-interpretava le grandi verità della fede cristiana, così il pluralismo religioso tende a diventare l’orizzonte della teologia del XXI secolo e ci invita a rivisitare i grandi capitoli della dogmatica cristiana. Si tratta della risposta ad una situazione storica incontestabile ed anche della conseguenza di una intuizione-chiave del Vaticano II che, per la prima volta nella storia del magistero romano, ha dato un giudizio positivo sulle religioni non cristiane1.

2. L’umanesimo postmoderno e le sue sfide all’educazione cristiana

L’educazione è per definizione rivolta verso l’avvenire: essa e a un tempo trasmissione di un patrimonio di valori e di conoscenze acquisite dal passato, ma soprattutto è progetto prospettico, progetto d’uomo proponibile oggi alle generazioni che crescono. Ma nasce appunto qui il dramma di tanti adulti d’oggi, di genitori, educatori, pastori: hanno la convinzione, o almeno il sospetto, di non aver più un progetto d’uomo sicuro, plausibile, collaudato, da consegnare alla generazione successiva. Il tema dell’educazione è largamente rimosso dalla scuola e persino da molte famiglie.

La scuola tende a rifugiarsi in un ruolo di istruzione di saperi e di competenze, funzionale alle aspettative emergenti della società produttiva, mentre la famiglia, luogo tradizionale e naturale della prima socializzazione dei minorenni, si sente sempre più spropriata ed inerme di fronte all’invadenza crescente del tempo scolastico e della onnipresenza pervasiva dei media.

A monte di questa diffusa crisi dell’educazione, stanno fenomeni culturali macroscopici che è necessario individuare nella loro entità, per non ridurre a discorso moralistico e individuale un problema che ha radici storiche e strutturali, e dimensioni collettive. Volendo cogliere a grandi tratti schematici le principali sfide che la cultura postmoderna pone all’educazione, direi che possiamo condensarle in queste quattro.

1. La prima sfida può essere individuata nella crescente compresenza di varie visioni del mondo e della vita. E’ quello che si chiama comunemente il fenomeno del pluralismo culturale ed etico. La diversità culturale costituisce oggi un nodo problematico per l’antropologia come per il diritto, per la politica come per l’educazione. Il concetto di diversità è associato spesso a quelli di disuguaglianza, conflittualità, intolleranza. Da sempre e non solo da oggi, la diversità è stata fonte di sospetti e di paure, di autodifese e di aggressioni.

Oggi l’amplificarsi del fenomeno migratorio, l’estenuarsi del tradizionale concetto di stato nazionale, il sempre più facile accesso a fonti informative transnazionali e a modelli di vita indotti da altre culture hanno innescato un processo di inevitabile incontro-confronto (talvolta: scontro?) tra le molteplici identità coesistenti.

Nelle culture occidentali, ma non solo, convivono ormai concezioni immanenti e trascendenti, materialistiche e spiritualistiche, totalitarie e libertarie, agnostiche e fondamentaliste, laiciste e confessionali… Un ventaglio di visioni che, anziché contrapporsi in nette polarità dialettiche come poteva avvenire in tempi passati, convivono oggi piuttosto indifferentemente nel mondo della politica come in quello dell’educazione pubblica, impregnano i sistemi della comunicazione massmediale come gli spazi del tempo libero, e sempre più spesso coabitano persino all’interno dei nuclei familiari, indipendentemente dalle variabili di età, di sesso, di professione.

Sarà ancora possibile, in tali contesti di diffuso pluralismo teorico e pratico, educare ad una, e ad una specifica visione della vita? Se relativismo e agnosticismo sono già largamente diffusi nelle coscienze adulte e aggrediscono ineluttabilmente le coscienze giovanili, come potrà imporsi, e a quale prezzo, un progetto educativo che voglia ispirarsi a una particolare concezione della vita? Questo è il dilemma che oggi sfida ogni sistema educativo: o introdurre i giovani, in modo a-valutativo ed equidistante, alle varie visioni della vita compresenti, nell’illusione di inseguire un’improbabile quanto vuota neutralità, oppure educare in modo partecipativo e appellante a una particolare visione – quella del proprio credo filosofico e religioso – col rischio però di formare delle persone impreparate a inserirsi e a convivere in una società pluralistica.

E’ indubbia la preferenza da accordare, anche solo dal punto di vista pedagogico, al secondo aspetto del dilemma. Ma almeno a due condizioni. La prima: saper superare sia una gretta autoreferenzialità al patrimonio dei propri valori ritenuti come esclusivi, sia la tentazione del „culto identitario”, che esonera dalla fatica delle necessarie mediazioni culturali. La seconda: non minimizzare, nell’educazione, i provvidenziali aspetti positivi dello stesso pluralismo che obbliga i credenti/cristiani a verificare progetti e strumenti educativi pensati in tempi di „cristianità”, che impegna le organizzazioni religiose a vincoli di interdipendenza e solidarietà con le molteplici e inedite espressioni del volto politico e culturale delle società civili.

In altre parole, si tratta di iniziarsi alla propria cultura ma senza pretendere di assolutizzarla e di comprendere le altre culture senza subordinarle pregiudizialmente alla propria. In termini più direttamente educativi si tratta di:

  • conoscere in modo autocritico la propria posizione culturale;
  • conoscere e tollerare senza pregiudizi sfavorevoli le posizioni di chi è diverso da noi per idee e comportamenti;
  • riconoscere positivamente i valori degli altri, quand’ anche fossero incompatibili con i propri;
  • impegnarsi, al di là delle idee e convinzioni personali, in attività comuni di integrazione reciproca.

2. La seconda sfida, conseguente e complementare alla prima, è data dalla caduta di significatività di un certo modello di antropologia e di educazione cristiana monoculturale, etnocentrica, normata da parametri di ortodossia veritativa e di ortoprassi morale, ma indifferente ai canoni estetici, emozionali, simbolici. Se educazione significa aiutare ad appropriarsi creativamente di quel patrimonio simbolico elaborato dalle generazioni precedenti per dare un significato alla vita, troppi indizi lasciano oggi intendere che non solo una certa trasmissione di valori e stili di vita non è più praticabile come un tempo, ma che quegli stessi contenuti che risultavano significativi per le generazioni di ieri risultano spesso „in-significanti” nella cultura odierna.

L’accesso al senso globale della vita, reso possibile ieri da un tessuto sociale portante che oggettivava il patrimonio culturale in costume e linguaggio, in riti civili e religiosi, in norme e istituzioni, è ostacolato oggi dalla disintegrazione di quel tessuto sociale in seguito all’autonomia acquisita dalle singole sfere dello scambio sociale (politica, economia, religione, famiglia, scuola, pubblico/privato ecc.). I grandi sistemi di significato tradizionali hanno perduto, nelle società occidentali, credibilità assolutezza, centralità; c’è un istintivo rifiuto delle grandi sintesi, dei „grandi racconti” . Di qui la crisi di quelle evidenze etiche veicolate nei nostri paesi dalla tradizione cristiana, evidenze che costituivano l’orizzonte entro cui si definiva oggettivamente il senso della vita umana. Da qui anche l’accentuarsi odierno della distinzione tra moralità pubblica e devianza privata, nel senso che le condotte trasgressive che minacciano per esempio i diritti dell’uomo, la vita comunitaria o l’ecosistema risultano maggiormente condannate, mentre appaiono giustificate o facilmente giustificabili gli atteggiamenti più trasgressivi delle norme che regolano la vita privata dell’individuo.

Oltre che dal dolore, dalla malattia, dalla morte, l’uomo ha bisogno di essere liberato dalla assurdità del non-senso della vita, da quell’insignificanza di sé, del tempo, delle cose, che inquieta e mortifica la sua natura di essere ragionevole.

Se manca un senso del vivere cade pure il senso del futuro, la capacità progettuale, l’appello a realizzare una vocazione personale nella storia.

Psicologi e psicoterapeuti hanno offerto contributi notevoli alla educazione della scoperta del senso. Due nomi per tutti, assai noti nelle scienze umane, che scelgo volutamente dalla cultura umanistica non ecclesiastica: Alfred Adler, che ritiene con buone ragioni che nel senso della vita risieda la regola che guida in ogni individuo il pensiero, l’affettività, le attività ludiche e lavorative; occorre però che insegnamento, educazione e terapia aiutino la persona a sintonizzare il senso ideale alla vita reale e viceversa. L’altro nome è Viktor E. Frankl, fondatore della logoterapia, che, grazie a una filosofia della vita in perenne ricerca di significati e di compiti da realizzare, non soltanto ha ribaltato le obsolete interpretazioni psicoanalitiche, che vedevano all’origine dei disturbi psichici solo repressioni e complessi, ma ha soprattutto individuato gli itinerari da seguire per aiutare la persona a costruirsi un’identità o a recuperarla, a darsi ragioni per vivere e per vivere pienamente.

3. Un terzo fronte di sfide all’educazione è costituito da un ampio ventaglio di fratture strutturali e culturali, che minano l’unità della persona o spezzano i vincoli della comunità umana e per questo pongono ostacolo oggettivoal progetto educativo. Ecco alcune delle principali fratture, riprese frequentementedalle analisi di sociologi e filosofi contemporanei:

  • – la divaricazione tra progresso e valori dello spirito, constatabile, per esempio, tra un ordine socio-economico tutto teso alla fruizione concorrenziale dei beni materiali, da una parte, e, dall’altra, il proliferare inoffensivo di dichiarazioni di principio sulla dignità della persona umana e la solidarietà sociale; tra un sistema educativo magari all’avanguardia in fatto di tecnologie istruttive e di programmi al fine di riuscire funzionale agli interessi del sistema produttivo, ma proprio per questo inadempiente sul versante primario e irrinunciabile della educazione critica e della formazione della coscienza personale;
  • – la dissociazione tra l’imperante cultura scientifico-tecnica e i saperi simbolico-religiosi, questi ultimi ridotti spesso a discipline marginali o addirittura ininfluenti nei curricoli di studio e a partire spesso dai primi anni di scuola; è il „gap” tra il primato di fatto dei saperi strumentali, che offrono competenze spendibili nel mercato delle attività produttive, e la marginalità dei tradizionali saperi simbolici, le cosiddette discipline umanistiche, più gratuite e disinteressate; l’illusione della scuola, anche della scuola cristiana, è di presumere che il senso globale della vita, che in tempo di cristianità era trasmesso per via naturale dal contesto vitale quotidiano, possa venir elaborato oggi dalla scuola per via concettuale;
  • – la distinzione, che a volte si radicalizza in separazione, tra la sfera pubblica e la sfera privata dell’attività umana, con il conseguente abusivo sconfinamento dell’attività religiosa e delle scelte etiche individuali nella sfera del privato personale. Sono fratture di varia natura, e di diversa origine e portata. Tutte però, proprio per il loro potenziale dissociante e disgregante, concorrono a rendere più problematica un’educazione integrale, che ambisca reintegrare i frammenti provenienti da più modelli coesistenti di vita nella totalità organica della persona.

In questo contesto diventa problematico – qualcuno arriva persino a dire: proibitivo – educare alla verità, inteso come processo unitario a scoprire il vero e nel contempo a diventare veri come persone. E’ chiaro che questa educazione alla verità dovrebbe implicare tutte le dimensioni costitutive della persona, da quelle intellettuali e scientifiche a quelle affettivo-sentimentali, dalla dimensione simbolico-religiosa a quella etica-comportamentale. In ciascuna sfera occorre saper padroneggiare un certo patrimonio di conoscenze oggettive verificate e nel contempo saper verificare (= render vero, effettivo) nel vissuto quotidiano quelle acquisizioni, mediante l’esercizio della capacità di discernimento, di scelta e di condotta coerente. Questo in linea di principio.

Di fatto, sono note le difficoltà in cui oggi s’imbatte ogni educatore che voglia promuovere verità nel senso pieno del termine: riduzione del vero all’empiricamente verificabile, primato del criterio dell’efficacia tecnica, vitalismo e soggettivismo (il miglior terreno per la cultura del pensiero debole), relativismo indotto da un malinterpretato pluralismo, condizionamento mediatico (esiste e conta solo quello che passa dai media), l’esposizione prolungata alla seduzione della cosiddetta „realtà virtuale”, la perdita di contatto con le radici storiche del patrimonio culturale ereditato, l’estenuarsi della capacità progettuale nelle giovani generazioni, come sopra ricordato… In siffatto clima culturale lo scontro tra generazioni e relative visioni della vita sembra inevitabile.

E anche la scuola si trova impotente, o spesso in ritardo, a ridiventare luogo di elaborazione, non della verità tout court, è ovvio, ma dei presupposti culturali e degli strumenti critici che dovrebbero permettere ad ogni persona l’accesso alla verità.

4. Un’ulteriore, quarta sfida tocca più da vicino i processi dell’educazione religiosa: la possiamo chiamare la sfida della pertinenza culturale del fatto cristiano. Nel contesto culturale della post-modernità il cristianesimo si trova a dover realizzare una re-inculturazione dell’annuncio evangelico, oppure rassegnarsi a lasciarsi emarginare come un residuo del passato. L’inculturazione nell’universo classico, realizzata dalle prime generazioni cristiane e poi via via modulata attraverso due millenni, mostra la sua obsolescenza a partire dalla sua grammatica di base. L’antropologia mutuata dalla cultura greca, soprattutto dopo la svolta costantiniana, appare oggi trascesa o addirittura ignorata dalla percezione prevalente nelle nuove generazioni. Il dualismo carne-spirito, anima-corpo che – malgrado fosse fondamentalmente estraneo alla spiritualità dei profeti dell’AT e al nucleo del NT – ha egemonizzato il cristianesimo occidentale è ogni giorno di più una prigione, sia pure aurea, per la comunicazione della fede cristiana. Ci si avvede che questa è una antropologia di separazione e di contrapposizione (uomo-donna, bianco-nero, ricco-povero…), incomponibile con la coscienza democratica dell’uguaglianza.

Si radica qui anche quella specie di slittamento moralistico (inconsapevole?) di tanta parte del magistero e della pastorale recente.

Nelle nostre chiese – ho presenti soprattutto le comunità cattoliche in Occidente – da alcuni decenni a questa parte l’esperienza religiosa, compresa quella propriamente liturgica e sacramentale, viene vissuta come un’esperienza emotiva, forse anche per influsso di un diffuso clima di abdicazione della ragione forte a vantaggio del cosiddetto „pensiero debole” (coniato dal filosofo torinese Gianni Vattimo). Da un certo punto di vista il messaggio cristiano – che di per sé apparterrebbe più all’ordine simbolico-analogico che a quello razionale-speculativo – potrebbe trovarsi avvantaggiato in questo clima culturale improntato al primato dell’ emozionale sul razionale (come ricorda la sociologa francese Danièle Hervieu-Léger). Senonché questo messaggio si scontra oggi con un notevole handicap: il fatto di essere stato tradizionalmente formulato in termini di ortodossia dottrinale più che in codici simbolici, affettivi, estetici, lo fa percepire istintivamente distante dalle condizioni di ricettività e di intelligibilità dell’uomo contemporaneo; in ciò sta la difficoltà della fede a tradurre i suoi contenuti verbali in quei linguaggi universali propri della creatività artistica, che per secoli – dalla musica all’ icona, dall’architettura al rito liturgico – sono stati il tramite felice ed efficace di un „con-sentire” ecclesiale e comunitario intorno ai valori che davano senso profondo e permanente alla vita. Era il tempo in cui non era nemmeno necessaria una vera e propria educazione cristiana o iniziazione intenzionalmente programmata, perché bastava quello lasciar agire quell’automatismo sociologico di riproduzione culturale, che oggi gli studiosi dei processi culturali chiamano socializzazione religiosa.

3. Condizioni per affrontare la sfida educativa nel postmoderno Le molteplici analisi che da un ventennio a questa parte ci parlano dell’ „uomo post-moderno” ci consegnano l’immagine di un uomo in cui è fatto spazio alla differenza, alla alterità, al limite, alla complessità. Ne consegue la necessità di una somma cautela in ogni affermazione sull’uomo. Direi che sono almeno due i postulati di base che l’odierna concezione antropologica consegna alla nostra responsabilità di credenti e di pastori2:

  • – quello del senso dell’essere-uomo, nel momento in cui il confine e la relazione tra natura, tecnica e morale (= essere, poter essere e dover essere) sono divenuti problematici al limite della rottura, e interpellano la coscienza personale e collettiva;
  • – e quello della comprensione e gestione del pluralismo e delle differenze che esso comporta a tutti i livelli: di pensiero, di opzione morale, di cultura, di filosofia dello sviluppo umano e sociale, di adesione religiosa.

Cadono quindi come insufficientemente probanti:

  • – sia i modelli d’uomo di tipo speculativo-essenzialista, tesi a svelare unicamente l’essenza atemporale dell’uomo, definita in termini di qualità costitutive (intelligenza, libertà, volontà…), o di dimensioni fondamentali (individualità, socialità, politicità, religiosità …), o del suo statuto soprannaturale (grazia-peccato, virtù teologali, ecc). Una tale antropologia cristiana declinata in chiave di natura atemporale rischia di lasciare all’oscuro gli aspetti storico-culturali di crescita e di sviluppo dell’essere umano. L’essenza in questo caso mette in penombra e sacrifica le dinamiche fondamentali dell’esistenza;
  • – sia i modelli d’uomo di tipo esperienziale-relazionale, costruiti in chiave di intersoggettività, o di gratificazione emozionale, in quanto rischiano di trascurare la necessaria dimensione ontologica, istituzionale, contestuale, metapersonale della crescita umana.

Risulta dunque meglio plausibile una prospettiva storico-prassica dell’educazione, che riesca a pensare l’uomo in termini di soggetto e popolo, di uomo e donna, di essere che è e si fa persona, libertà, storia, cultura, in e mediante l’attività comune di trasformazione della realtà concreta con cui ci si trova a vivere, fatta anch’essa in tal modo partecipe dello stesso processo di emancipazione e di liberazione. Il riferimento ultimo, dunque, è sempre l’uomo reale, non l’idea di uomo e neppure la natura umana in sé o l’uomo in generale, ma la persona concreta, materialmente individuata, cronologicamente datata, geograficamente e culturalmente ubicata.

L’educazione è, per definizione, azione situata in un contesto dinamico e interattivo. La pedagogia contemporanea, quella cristianamente orientata compresa, ha espresso posizioni di rottura nei confronti di una educazione intesa come trasmissione impersonale di verità depositate o di valori atemporali o che si presumono socialmente „innocenti”. Dal don Milani della Scuola toscana di Barbiana al Paulo Freire della „pedagogia della liberazione” brasiliana, l’educazione è fondamentalmente dialogo tra soggetti radicati in precisi contesti socio-economici, è cultura problematizzante incentrata sulle contraddizioni del presente all’opposto di una cultura depositaria decontestualizzata, che conforma l’alunno ad adeguarsi oggi all’assetto sociale esistente, anche se ingiusto, e domani a difenderlo se corrisponde ai propri interessi di categoria.

Educazione, cristianamente intesa, è „pratica di libertà” per imparare a diventare cittadini liberi in una società che ti vorrebbe suddito, a diventare credenti responsabili in una comunità ecclesiale dove, prima delle legittime differenze di ruoli e ministeri, deve vigere il principio della pari dignità personale e, teologicamente parlando, dell’universale sacerdozio dei fedeli.

Per ripensare l’azione educativa cristiana nel nuovo quadro di riferimento appena richiamato, alcuni criteri di fondo mi sembrano prioritari.

1. Il criterio della complessità.

Anzitutto, tener conto della complessità della nuova condizione umana: complessità nell’essere e nell’operare, ma anche nell’interpretare e nel progettare. Una complessità che è il frutto – come ricorda Niklas Luhmann – del disintegrarsi del sistema sociale tradizionale sostanzialmente unitario in vari sottosistemi autonomi (quello economico, il politico, il giuridico, l’educativo, la scienza, l’arte…), ciascuno dei quali non ha più bisogno, come avveniva nel passato, della religione come fattore di ‘integrazione sociale’ o come orizzonte di senso.

Di fatto è una complessità secolarizzata, consegnata a un orizzonte infrastorico, incapace o insufficiente a dare un senso unitario e trascendente alla vita. Per di più l’uomo d’oggi vivendo la sua vita in un mondo sempre più estetizzato e quindi dominato da esperienze puntuali, maggiormente esposte alla discontinuità e alla frammentazione, sembra aver perduto la possibilità di trasmettere ciò che dall’esperienza stessa ha imparato: cioè quell’insieme di norme e comportamenti per la cui trasmissione è necessaria una durata, nella quale le esperienze possano sedimentarsi e stabilizzarsi.

In linea di principio, il criterio della complessità chiederebbe all’azione educativa di riconoscere, certo, le antinomie, le contraddizioni, le polarità della condizione umana (io/me, esistenza/essenza, materia/spirito, individuo/società, uomo/natura, identità/alterità…), ma di assumerle nella loro irrinunciabile complementarità, pena la caduta in progetti riduttivi di educazione, come l’addestramento psico-fisico dettato da certo biologismo antropologico, o al contrario, il plagio moralistico fondato su forme di pietismo o spiritualismo pedagogico…

2. La strategia della  “sapiente gradualità”.

La indicava il card. Martini appena un paio d’anni fa quand’era ancora sulla sua cattedra di Milano: Non basta proclamare il valore della vita o scatenare battaglie per difenderla.

In una società pluralista è piuttosto necessario attenersi a una sapiente gradualità evitando i due estremi:

  • da una parte, l’immediata e precipitosa pretesa di tradurre in politica e in leggi dello stato o in itinerari educativi i valori cristiani,
  • e dall’altra l’oblio pratico di tali valori.

Non è dato oggi di perseguire l’obiettivo della cristianizzazione della società con strumenti forti del potere, ma di preservare la differenza della Parola cristiana rispetto alle parole correnti, sapendo che proprio così la Parola sarà efficace anche per la salvaguardia e la promozione dell’ethos pubblico di una nazione3.

Tramontata l’egemonia, reale o presunta, della cultura cristiana nelle nostre società civili, è tornato il tempo delle doverose e faticose mediazioni, il tempo di una laicità da difendere anche come valore evangelico, anziché combatterla come una nemica delle nostre sicurezze teocratiche.

3. L’imperativo etico della responsabilità personale.

Non si può parlare di educazione cristiana se persone e istituzioni non promuovono il passaggio da una morale della legge ad una morale della coscienza, o più propriamente della responsabilità. Alla elencazione dei precetti negativi si sostituisce la presentazione della vita cristiana secondo l’ideale della perfezione, i cui contenuti essenziali sono condensati nel discorso della montagna; alla concezione della vita morale come adeguamento a prescrizioni rigide e dettagliate subentra una concezione alternativa, che fa appello alla coscienza come criterio ultimo di valutazione dei comportamenti e spinge l’uomo al pieno esercizio della responsabilità nelle decisioni4.

L’acquisizione di questo modello è impresa lunga e difficile; molte sono infatti le resistenze, dovute alla necessità di fuoriuscire da una condizione di passività e di dipendenza, che è d’altronde rassicurante, per entrare in una condizione di risposta attiva e personale alle esigenze del momento storico e della propria vocazione; condizione che, non avendo a che fare con parametri nettamente definiti o con soluzioni prefabbricate, può generare stati di insicurezza e di ansia. Ma qui sta appunto il grande compito di ogni progetto educativo ispirato al vangelo: scoprire la verità e fare la verità, perché, in ultima analisi, „è la verità che vi farà liberi” (Gv 8,32).

Lo ricorda con accento solenne la voce dell’ „umanista” Giovanni Paolo II, quando nel finale della sua enciclica Fides et ratio (n.107) prorompe in questa invocazione accorata:

A tutti chiedo di guardare in profondità all’uomo, alla sua costante ricerca di verità e di senso.

Diversi sistemi filosofici, illudendolo, lo hanno convinto che egli è assoluto padrone di sé, che può decidere autonomamente del proprio destino e del proprio futuro, confidando solo in se stesso e sulle proprie forze. La grandezza dell’uomo non potrà mai essere questa.

Determinante per la sua realizzazione sarà soltanto la scelta di inserirsi nella verità, costruendo la propria abitazione all’ombra della Sapienza e abitando in essa. Solo in questo orizzonte veritativo comprenderà il pieno esplicitarsi della sua libertà e la sua chiamata all’amore e alla conoscenza di Dio come attuazione suprema di sé.
