«Furono le prime vittime degli mperialisti»

Parla monsignor Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, che spiega gli obiettivi della polemica sulle canonizzazioni del 1º ottobre: mettere in difficoltà la Chiesa riconosciuta dal governo per bloccare il processo verso la piena comunione con Roma

      Il salesiano Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, 68 anni, non è venuto a Roma. Ha seguito le canonizzazioni dei martiri cinesi da Hong Kong, dove dal ’96 è vescovo coadiutore. Con questo “cristiano di seconda generazione” nato a Shanghai, che ben conosce le storie vitali e dolenti dei cristiani cinesi, 30Giorni ha analizzato nel dettaglio gli aspetti che hanno trasformato l’elevazione agli altari dei martiri di Cina in un nuovo, controverso episodio di tensione tra Pechino e la Santa Sede.

      Chi ha sostenuto con più impeto la canonizzazione dei martiri cinesi?       JOSEPH ZEN ZE-KIUN: I fedeli cattolici di Hong Kong e di Taiwan conservano forte il legame affettivo con i rispettivi luoghi di provenienza delle proprie famiglie, nella Cina continentale. Molti di loro provengono dalle province in cui questi nuovi santi di Cina sono stati martirizzati. La devozione popolare verso queste figure, soprattutto a Taiwan, era molto forte. Inoltre, molti dei martiri appartenevano a congregazioni religiose – i Domenicani, i Gesuiti, i Francescani, i Salesiani, i missionari del Pime e delle Missions étrangères de Paris – che si sentivano coinvolte nel sostenere le canonizzazioni. Finora era prevalsa la considerazione, un po’ politica, di non portare avanti una canonizzazione che poteva essere considerata come una provocazione. Negli ultimi anni, soprattutto la Chiesa di Taiwan, coi vescovi in testa, ha ritenuto che queste premure non fossero giustificate. Anche perché i martiri giapponesi, coreani e vietnamiti erano già stati canonizzati, e i nostri erano stati beatificati da tanto tempo. La Santa Sede, poi, è stata generosa, dispensando da certe condizioni e procedure richieste per il processo di canonizzazione, tenendo conto della difficoltà di svolgere le indagini e raccogliere materiale nell’attuale contesto sociopolitico cinese.       Lei, dunque, conferma che a premere di più per queste canonizzazioni sono stati i vescovi di Taiwan.       ZEN: Sì. In Cina continentale, i cattolici sono presi da tanti problemi immediati, non hanno come problema principale quello di far accelerare le canonizzazioni. Anche perché, una volta che c’è stato il processo di beatificazione, il culto è già ammesso, e la gente non è così ansiosa di veder canonizzare i beati. Ci sono tante necessità molto più pressanti…       Su queste canonizzazioni si è scatenato il putiferio.       ZEN: Le dichiarazioni attribuite all’Associazione patriottica dei cattolici cinesi e alla Conferenza dei vescovi cinesi riconosciuti dal governo sono state di una gravità enorme. Si sono allineati senza la minima differenziazione alle parole d’ordine dei portavoce del governo, accusando i martiri cinesi di essere dei criminali imperialisti e condannando duramente la canonizzazione, che è un atto solennissimo dell’autorità del Papa, e implica la sua infallibilità. Mai gli organismi della Chiesa “ufficiale” erano arrivati a tanto. Non è difficile pensare che siano stati costretti a sottoscrivere e ripetere comunicati piovuti dall’alto. Ma proprio questo mi ha fatto capire finalmente il vero bersaglio a cui mirava la reazione così esasperata dei funzionari di Pechino. Prima pensavo: vogliono fare pressione sulla Santa Sede, perché sia più flessibile nelle trattative per normalizzare i rapporti. Ma adesso ho capito che il vero scopo di tutto questo è mettere con le spalle al muro proprio la Chiesa ufficiale, quella riconosciuta dal governo. Si sono accorti che stavano perdendo il controllo. Hanno visto che quasi tutti i vescovi, per vie riservate, hanno dichiarato la propria comunione con la Chiesa di Roma, e sono stati riconosciuti dal Papa; e che i giovani preti, educati nei seminari finanziati dal governo, senza far troppo rumore si sottraggono in tanti modi anche fantasiosi alle strutture di controllo, oramai superate. E allora, qualcuno a Pechino ha colto al balzo il pretesto delle canonizzazioni per costringere di nuovo vescovi, sacerdoti e seminaristi a una pubblica presa di posizione contro la Sede apostolica. È come se dicessero: le canonizzazioni confermano ancora una volta che la Santa Sede è nemica della nostra patria, e voi della Chiesa di Cina dovete dichiarare da che parte state. Insomma, è possibile che nel prossimo futuro anche i vescovi riconosciuti dal governo subiscano maggiori pressioni. Ma io so per certo che in cuor loro, insieme ai loro fedeli, sono contenti di queste canonizzazioni. Nelle difficoltà che si troveranno davanti, saranno lieti di poter chiedere il conforto di chi li può aiutare dal Paradiso.

      Lei è a conoscenza di gesti di devozione verso questi martiri da parte dei fedeli della Cina continentale?       ZEN: Quando gruppi di fedeli di Taiwan e di Hong Kong si recano in pellegrinaggio sui luoghi di martirio, di solito le autorità locali “consigliano” ai cristiani locali di non prendere parte a questi atti di devozione.       Molti dei martiri canonizzati vennero uccisi durante la rivolta antimperialista dei Boxer. Per questo, a Pechino, dicono di essersi arrabbiati.       ZEN: Tutti i nuovi santi vennero martirizzati prima dell’avvento del comunismo in Cina. Quindi i comunisti non c’entrano niente. Ma nei libri di testo cinesi oggi in uso anche i Boxer vengono presentati in blocco come eroi nazionali, insorti per difendere la dinastia dagli imperialisti occidentali che stavano dividendosi a pezzi l’Impero in crisi. Storicamente, c’è molto da discutere. Anche i Boxer raggiunsero punte estreme di fanatismo. E spesso, quando ammazzavano i missionari, erano spinti non da una reazione antimperialista, ma da un vero odio religioso contro la fede cristiana.       Eppure in alcuni casi, riconosciuti anche da parte cattolica, ci furono relazioni pericolose tra missioni e strategie coloniali in terra cinese.       ZEN: Ma io direi che le prime vittime degli imperialisti erano proprio questi poveri missionari, manipolati e strumentalizzati dai propri connazionali colonizzatori, che creavano non pochi ostacoli alla missione evangelizzatrice. Furono gli imperialisti che diedero a chi odiava il cristianesimo il pretesto per ammazzare i missionari, accusandoli di connivenza coi colonizzatori. Ma in Cina si dice che gli occhi del popolo vedono chiaro, sono trasparenti. E i fedeli sapevano distinguere bene gli imperialisti, che detestavano, e i missionari, che si sacrificavano e vivevano poveramente per testimoniare il Vangelo. Chi si convertiva continuava ad amare la propria patria e il proprio popolo, ed era contento di aver ricevuto il Vangelo dai missionari. Anche io, girando per il nord della Cina, ho incontrato qualche vecchio allievo salesiano, che mi diceva: neanche diecimila discorsi di propaganda riusciranno a convincerci che i missionari che abbiamo conosciuto erano imperialisti. Quelli erano dei poveri cristi, che volevano bene a Gesù. Vivendo come noi, mangiando con noi il cibo dei poveri, abitando in tuguri.       Lei cosa avrebbe detto al governo di Pechino per smorzare le polemiche?       ZEN: Ai comunisti avrei detto: questi martiri sono gente che ha sofferto e ha dato la vita per quello in cui credeva. Si sono fatti ammazzare senza prendere le armi, non hanno chiesto aiuto agli eserciti coloniali. Meritano il vostro rispetto umano, così come noi proviamo rispetto per chi, anche tra i comunisti, si è sacrificato pensando di combattere per la causa della giustizia. E smettiamola di giudicare tutto a partire dai contrasti contingenti del presente.       Comunque, la scelta della data, in coincidenza con la festa nazionale della Cina popolare, non è stata proprio felice…       ZEN: Io sono del parere che bisogna riconoscere che è stata una gaffe. Su questo, spiegando bene, e senza esagerare, si poteva anche chiedere scusa, per togliere il sospetto che la data sia stata scelta con intento provocatorio. L’anno giubilare è così pieno di impegni per il Papa, quella era una domenica libera… Certo, se ci fossero state più consultazioni, qualcuno avrebbe potuto avvertire che il primo ottobre era un giorno da evitare. Adesso, chi li convince che è stata una svista, che non si voleva provocare nessuno? Anche la giustificazione ufficiale, che si è scelto il giorno di santa Teresina, patrona delle missioni, sembra un po’ costruita a posteriori. Non ci crederanno mai. Pazienza.
