San Giovanni di Dio porta la croce

La memoria di San Giovanni di Dio, secondo il calendario ambrosiano,  si celebra IL 28 Novembre mentre per la liturgia di rito latino l’8 Marzo. Il richiamo al grande Patriarca è d’obbligo per chi in San Riccardo Pampuri vede un modello di fede, una guida, un intercessore, essendo lui uno degli ultimi anelli della catena di santità  “samaritana” che hanno nell’instancabile camminatore di Granada la prima intuizione di una grande COMPAGNIA…che, di secolo in secolo, si rinnova e si rimodella.

Si va incontro all’Avvento, uno dei tempi forti per rimettersi in discussione. C’è un’affinità tra i pastori di Betlemme e l’ essere Compagnia:

“8In quella stessa regione c’erano anche alcuni pastori. Essi passavano la notte all’aperto per fare la guardia al loro gregge. 9Un angelo del Signore si presentò a loro, la gloria del Signore li avvolse di luce ed essi ebbero una grande paura. 10L’angelo disse: “Non temete! Io vi porto una bella notizia che procurerà una grande gioia a tutto il popolo: 11oggi per voi, nella città di Davide, è nato il Salvatore, il Cristo, il Signore. 12Lo riconoscerete così: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce che giace in una mangiatoia”. 13Subito apparvero con lui molti altri angeli. Essi lodavano Dio con questo canto: 14“Gloria a Dio in cielo e sulla terra pace per quelli che egli ama”. Poi gli angeli si allontanarono dai pastori e se ne tornarono in cielo. 15Intanto i pastori dicevano gli uni agli altri: “Andiamo fino a Betlemme per vedere quel che è accaduto e che il Signore ci ha fatto sapere”. 16Giunsero in fretta a Betlemme e là trovarono Maria, Giuseppe e il bambino che giaceva nella mangiatoia. 17Dopo averlo visto, fecero sapere ciò che avevano sentito di questo bambino. 18Tutti quelli che ascoltarono i pastori si meravigliarono di quello che essi raccontavano. 19Maria, da parte sua, custodiva il ricordo di tutti questi fatti e li meditava dentro di sé. 20I pastori, sulla via del ritorno, lodavano Dio e lo ringraziavano per quel che avevano sentito e visto, perché tutto era avvenuto come l’angelo aveva loro detto.” (Luca 2, 8ss)

C’era una volta… “8In quella stessa regione c’erano anche alcuni pastori. Essi passavano la notte all’aperto per fare la guardia al loro gregge”.    

Ma  è successo anche ai nostri giorni….,  in regioni italiane e non solo, a delle persone che  badavano al loro gregge:  il lavoro, lo studio, il commercio, gli affari, gli interessi…

E furono raggiunte da un “annuncio” che destò sospetto, stupore, meraviglia ma anche diffidenza.

Davanti al divino che si rivela,  può sorgere uno stupore intuitivo e aperto, o addiritura un dubbio che si chiude nel rifiuto.

Il messaggio: diventare “SCHIENE A DISPOSIZIONE DI DIO“. Suggestivo. Ma anche misterioso e, comunque, impegnativo.

Lo STUPORE è semplicemente una soglia.  Maria stupita dalle parole dell’angelo, osa varcarla, fare un’esperienza di fede, accetta  l’ “oltre“.

Anche i pastori l’hanno varcata, hanno accettato di andare da Gesù ed hanno anche testimoniato quanto hanno appreso. Ma questo è soltanto un inizio. Non bisognerebbe accontentarsi ma tanti si fermano qui.

Il secondo momento, quello determinante, consiste nell’entrare nell’ottica di Maria. Luca dei pastori non parla più nel suo vangelo; essi cedono il posto a una donna, la quale, non solo custodisce nel cuore i fatti e le parole di cui è stata spettatrice e protagonista, ma anche li media, nel tentativo di interpretarli e comprenderli.

Cosa mi sta chiedendo Dio?

Attraverso il modello di fede che è Maria, la COMPAGNIA… è chiamata a oltrepassare la soglia dello stupore, ad entrare in intimità con il Verbo Incarnato, a maturare e a crescere, ad appropriarsi del Mistero che si è fatto vicino per grazia.

L’itinerario è sempre il medesimo:

  • ascolto della Parola di Dio,
  • ascolto delle parole di persone che si sono messe in scolto, in relazione, pronte a stupirsi della grandezza e della misericordia di Dio che si manifestano in ognuno.
  • Dopo l’ascolto, l’impegno.
  • Ma la Parola e le parole che parlano di Dio devono diventare un “parlare con Lui“, il solo modo per “dimorare” nel Mistero divino, con Cristo, nello Spirito, davanti al Padre.

Dalle «Lettere» di san Giovanni di Dio:
CRISTO E’ FEDELE E A TUTTO PROVVEDE

“Se guardassimo alla misericordia di Dio, non cesseremo mai di fare il bene tutte le volte che se ne offre la possibilità. Infatti quando, per amor di Dio, passiamo ai poveri ciò che egli stesso ha dato a noi, ci promette il centuplo nella beatitudine eterna.
O felice guadagno, o beato acquisto! Chi non donerà a quest’ottimo mercante ciò che possiede, quando cura il nostro interesse e ci supplica a braccia aperte di convertirci a lui e di piangere i nostri peccati e di metterci al servizio della carità, prima verso di noi e poi verso il prossimo? Infatti come l’acqua estingue il fuoco, così la carità cancella il peccato (cfr. Sir 3, 29).
Vengono qui tanti poveri, che io molto spesso mi meraviglio in che modo possano esser mentenuti. Ma Gesù Cristo provvede a tutto e tutti sfama. Molti poveri vengono nella casa di Dio, perché la città di Granada é grande e freddissima, soprattutto ora che é inverno.
Abitano ora in questa casa oltre centodieci persone: malati, sani, poveri, pellegrini. Dato che questa é la casa generale, accoglie malati di ogni genere e condizione: rattrappiti nelle membra, storpi lebbrosi, muti, dementi, paralitici, tignosi, stremati dalla vecchiaia, molti fanciulli e inoltre innumerevoli pellegrini e viandanti, che giungono qui e trovano fuoco, acqua, sale e recipienti in cui cuocere i cibi. Non esistono stanziamenti pecuniari per tutti costoro, ma Cristo provvede.
Perciò lavoro con denaro altrui e sono prigioniero per onore di Gesù Cristo. Sono così oppresso dai debiti, che spesso non oso uscire di casa a motivo dei creditori ai quali devo rispondere. D’altra parte vi sono tanti poveri fratelli, mio prossimo, provati oltre ogni possibilità umana, sia nell’anima che nel corpo, che io sento grandissima amarezza di non poter soccorrere.
Confido tuttavia in Cristo che conosce il mio cuore. Perciò dico: Maledetto l’uomo che confida negli uomini e non confida in Cristo. Volente o nolente, gli uomini ti lasceranno. Cristo invece é fedele e immutabile. Cristo veramente provvede a tutto. A lui rendiamo sempre grazie. Amen.”

Cristo è fedele e a tutto provvede

Il 28 Novembre si celebra la traslazione delle reliquie di san Giovanni di Dio e la Chiesa Ambrosiana ne festeggia il santo patrono dei malati e degli operatori sanitari con le loro associazioni.

E’ utile soffermarsi su questa lettera che si legge anche nell’Ufficio Divino.

Emerge la figura di un grande carismatico, ripieno di Spirito Santo. Nel quadro, alle spalle, l’Arcangelo San Raffaele, una presenza costante, la “medicina di Dio”, mano provvidenziale quotidianamente presente e sollecita.

I tempi non sono cambiati.

  • Oggi abbiamo uno sterminato campo di concentamento di stranieri.
  • E di malati psichici.
  • E di migliaia di giovani a rischio suicidio.

Chissà cosa non riuiscirebbe a fare con la sua fantasia dellacarità.

Ma il testimonio è passato a noi. E fare del cuore una casa ospitale è richiesto ad ogni cristiano.

Vicino a lui, squattrinato al cubo, facciamo una pessima figura. Ma dobbiamo liberarci dal destino di curiosi spettatori ai margini della piazza.

Taranto – Il convento di San Giovanni di Dio dal 1591 al 1912

Storia di un antico edificio scomparso sotto i colpi della modernità e della indifferenza di molti. Fu costruito alla fine dell’800 in Via SS. Annunziata, accanto alla Chiesa omonima poi intitolata “SS.Crocifisso”, dove oggi ha sede un istituto bancario.

La lettura della pubblicazione “SS. Crocifisso, Storia e Restauro”, TA 1999, a cura dei Marisa Ferrara (in “Ribalta” n. 19, gennaio 2001, pp. 30-33), che presenta una immagine della “antica facciata della Chiesa con annesso Convento”, ha risvegliato nel prof. Giuseppe Ferrara, artista e studioso di storia dell’arte ed urbanistica, un forte interesse per il bell’edificio annesso alla Chiesa, quello sulla destra, il “Convento”, ora scomparso e sostituito da un edificio moderno, sede attuale di un Istituto Bancario.
L’antico edificio, di stile neoclassico, costruito presumibilmente alla fine dell’800, situato ad angolo tra via De Cesare e via SS. Annunziata con ingresso da via De Cesare, era articolato su quattro livelli: un piano semirialzato, primo e secondo piano, ed un bell’attico rientrato, circondato da un ampio terrazzo adornato da fioriere, arricchito da tre o quattro statue di grandi dimensioni. Un unico balcone, situato sopra l’arco di ingresso e corrispondente ad una porta-finestra del salone principale, adornava la facciata di via De Cesare interrompendo armonicamente la quieta ed elegante distribuzione delle aperture a finestra, identica sulle due facciate.
L’abbattimento dell’edificio, sembra nel 1953, e la costruzione al suo posto di uno stabile moderno, di un’architettura tipica di quegli anni, peraltro in una interpretazione particolarmente brutta (somiglia ad un carcere), risveglia il ricordo di quella “insensibilità” conservativa che negli anni del dopoguerra ha permesso quella operazione di distruzione dell’armonia e compattezza urbanistica del Borgo di Taranto. Il Borgo di Taranto, infatti, ha subito negli anni cinquanta una deprecabile alterazione urbanistica, prima con la sopraelevazione di uno o due piani aggiunti sulla maggior parte delle costruzioni esistenti, poi addirittura con l’abbattimento di numerosi edifici, alcuni di un certo valore, altri modesti da un punto di vista architettonico, che tuttavia formavano nel Borgo un complesso urbanistico compatto e tipologicamente armonioso, con caratteristiche stilistiche unitarie ed originali. La erezione di edifici moderni al posto di molte palazzine d’epoca, in fortissimo contrasto per stile e dimensioni con il resto dei palazzi del Borgo, ha modificato l’unità e la godibilità estetica dell’intero quartiere.
È da sottolineare che la nascita del Borgo per la città di Taranto aveva rappresentato una tappa evolutiva fondamentale non solo per la sua storia urbanistica, ma anche per la sua evoluzione socio-culturale. Purtroppo, il dopoguerra col suo desiderio collettivo di “rinnovamento” e di “ricostruzione” ha comportato, a Taranto come altrove, una notevole insensibilità verso la salvaguardia e la conservazione del patrimonio architettonico e urbanistico della città, spingendo le nuove generazioni ad abbandonare il “vecchio” per il “nuovo”, quasi a liberarsi di un passato indesiderato, in nome di una recuperata capacità economica e di rinascita.
Certamente anche la cattiva gestione politica, spesso connivente con la più sfrenata speculazione edilizia, ebbe un ruolo importante in questa azione di alterazione urbanistica, ma l’elemento determinante è stato certamente la mancata consapevolezza culturale: così come all’epoca era assente una “coscienza ecologica”, era assente anche una “coscienza urbanistica”.
E così sono stati abbattuti ignobilmente non solo edifici in sé modesti, ma utili alla conservazione dell’unità urbanistica, ma addirittura edifici architettonicamente validi, come il Convento dei Padri Carmelitani. Inoltre, per quanto riguarda il Complesso Conventuale “S. Giovanni di Dio”, oltre all’abbattimento del Convento, sono da notare altri due fatti deprecabili: la “dismissione” del Campanile e l’ “intrappolamento” della Cupola della Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso, a causa della costruzione di nuovi corpi edificativi.

Il Campanile non è quasi più visibile dalle strade circostanti, ma si può osservare dal tetto della Chiesa, che ricopre una costruzione recentemente realizzata, che ha a sua volta “insabbiato” parte della Cupola.
Il Campanile non è neanche più accessibile dalla Chiesa: fino a qualche anno fa arrivavano nella Sacrestia due corde per azionare la campana; ora non ci sono più neanche quelle. Il Campanile è, in realtà, una torre campanaria con archi a tutto sesto, quasi privo di decorazioni; non è un’opera di particolare bellezza, ma è una testimonianza della importante articolazione architettonica del Complesso Conventuale. Le mura delle più recenti costruzioni, appartenenti in parte alla Chiesa stessa e in parte all’ex-Ospedale, il cui edificio sulla sinistra della Chiesa fa parte integrante del Complesso Conventuale, hanno “inghiottito” la torre campanaria sino al 60%-70% della sua altezza. C’è da dire, inoltre, che nel Meridione d’Italia le torri campanarie sono molto rare, quasi tutte le chiese hanno campanili a vela, ed è per questo che il suo “sacrificio” dispiace particolarmente.
L’intendimento dell’autore dei due quadri (Convento e Campanile) è quello di risvegliare la “memoria visiva” di quei cittadini tarantini più attenti ed interessati alla storia della loro città, portando alla luce l’ “invisibile”, nel senso letterale della parola: poiché il Palazzo Conventuale è stato soppresso e il Campanile non è più visibile, essendo stato “affogato” dal cemento contemporaneo. Forse vale la pena dare un attento sguardo indietro al passato per ricostruire la storia di questo “isolato” tra via De Cesare e via Acclavio, attualmente occupato da un complesso di costruzioni: ex Ospedale vecchio (al momento vuoto), Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso e palazzo moderno di civile abitazione, con al piano terra un Istituto Bancario; costruzioni tutte prospicienti la via SS. Annunziata (tra l’altro una viuzza sporca e maleodorante per la presenza di numerosi cassonetti e l’incuria generale) a cavallo di una altura oggi occupata da un affollatissimo parcheggio-macchine (abusivo?). Il più antico nucleo di questo complesso sarebbe stato fondato nel 1363 come monastero per accogliere le prime Clarisse ospitate nella città di Taranto. Per l’erezione della casa religiosa delle Clarisse, dedicata alla SS. Annunziata, fu scelta questa zona della città, perché pare che in quel tempo fosse abitata, pur essendo fuori dell’isola. In breve sorsero la chiesa e il monastero, col cimitero e case annesse per la servitù, insomma un vero e proprio complesso. Però, delle prime vicende del monastero, delle monache che vi abitarono e della loro santa vita non si sa quasi nulla. Il Merodio, eruditissimo scrittore e predicatore della seconda metà del ‘600, nella sua “Historia tarantina” divisa in 5 libri, scrive di trovar “memoria del monastero delle monache circestiensi nella Chiesa di S. Giovanni di Dio”, ma non può scrivere della “fondazione e progressi di detto monastero, perché non hanno bastato le mie preghiere ed importune richieste a chi ne aveva per darmene notizia”. Quando il Complesso fu abbandonato è anche incerto. Sembra che ciò avvenisse quando i Turchi, nel 1480, presero Otranto e devastarono tutti i centri abitati sul mare, compreso Taranto. In tale circostanza, forse, le Clarisse abbandonarono il loro monastero e si misero in salvo nella città antica, che era fortificata.
Cacciati i turchi, sembra che le monache si siano ristabilite nello loro Casa, ma solo per pochi anni, perché dopo la discesa di Carlo VIII in Italia, nel 1495, a causa delle guerre di successione tra Francesi ed Aragonesi le vicinanze di Taranto furono completamente saccheggiate ed il Monastero della Clarisse, abbandonato, fu quasi distrutto. Venuti, nel 1576, a Taranto i Padri Carmelitani, furono ospitati presso la chiesetta della Madonna della Pace e successivamente presso la Chiesa di S. Salvatore. Riformato da S. Teresa l’Istituto Carmelitano, sorsero i Teresiani, approvati nel 1593 da Clemente VIII. Il culto della Santa di Avila, diffuso in Taranto dai Carmelitani, mosse le famiglie cittadine a finanziare la costruzione di un monastero per i padri e fu deciso di ricostruire il complesso che aveva costituito il vetusto monastero della Clarisse, rimasto abbandonato per parecchi anni, che si trovava in luogo comodo ed adatto, fuori dall’isola, armai troppo densamente popolata.
Notizie di questo periodo si possono reperire grazie ad alcuni documenti rinvenuti nell’Archivio di Stato, da cui si rileva che nel 1673 i Padri Carmelitani/Teresiani erano impegnati nella costruzione del loro Convento e che a conclusione di detta fabbrica si procedette alla costruzione della grande Chiesa centrale, terminata nel 1696. I Padri veneravano una insigne reliquia della loro Santa Istitutrice (che conservavano in una statua d’argento a mezzo busto), da ciò quel Monastero fu denominato di S. Teresa.
Ma già nel 1716 il Convento risultava in notevole stato di degrado e dopo il terremoto del 20 febbraio del 1743, durante il quale il complesso fu notevolmente danneggiato, i Padri furono costretti a trasferirsi nuovamente nella Chiesa di S. Salvatore.
Tra il 1808 e il 1813 il Complesso Conventuale fu adibito ad ospedale civile e tale è rimasto, per lo meno la costruzione sulla sinistra della Chiesa, fino ai tempi più recenti, ricordato come Ospedale di S. Teresa o denominato Ospedale vecchio, in contrapposizione alle nuove costruzioni ospedaliere.
L’Ospedale civile di Taranto era stato precedentemente allocato in diversi edifici. La prima sede di cui si ha memoria è presso il monastero dei Celestini, un’antica struttura, oggi demolita, posta tra piazza Municipio e Castel Sant’Angelo, con la chiesetta interna dedicala alla SS. Annunziata. Ma al tempo della visita pastorale di mons. Brancaccio, vescovo di Taranto dal 1574 al 1599, per indagare e mettere ordine non solo negli affari spirituali ma anche in quelli temporali e patrimoniali della diocesi di Taranto (sembra che le autorità temessero questa visita, perché avevano usurpato la casa dove era l’Ospedale per mettervi “munizioni ed altre cose di guerra”), l’ospedale, che come ente municipale era retto da delegati eletti dall’amministrazione civica denominata in quell’epoca Università, versava in cattiva situazione per carenze amministrative e sanitarie.
Nel 1591 l’ospedale fu dato, allora, in concessione alla Compagnia dei frati ospedalieri di S. Giovanni di Dio (che gestirono il nosocomio con grande dedizione e perizia per oltre tre secoli – senza peraltro acquisirne mai il possesso – sino al 1912 quando, dopo anni di contenzioso con il Comune di Taranto, la Compagnia rinunciò definitivamente ad ogni diritto sul nosocomio tarantino). Per migliorare la situazione dell’ospedale fu costruita una nuova sede, a nord della Chiesa di Santa Caterina, dirimpetto all’Arcivescovado, che però durante l’occupazione napoleonica divenne una postazione fortificata, a causa della sua posizione strategica. Fu nel 1813 che il nosocomio fu trasferito nella sede del Monastero dei Padri Carmelitani/Teresiani, il Convento di S. Teresa. La Chiesa annessa al Complesso Conventuale, a partire da quest’epoca, prese il nome di Chiesa di S. Giovanni di Dio, dal nome dei frati che gestivano l’ospedale. Successivamente, nel 1898, Mons. Jorio (vescovo di Taranto dal 1885 al 1908) eresse detta Chiesa a prima parrocchia del Borgo, affidandola alle cure pastorali dell’Ordine Carmelitano dell’antica Osservanza. La Chiesa è oggi conosciuta come Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso per la presenza della venerata scultura lignea del SS. Crocifisso (attribuita da alcuni a fra’ Umile Pintorno – fine sec. XVI -, da altri a fra’ Angelo da Pietrafitta – fine secolo XVII). La statua, precedentemente conservata nella Chiesa minorita di S. Antonio, trovandosi questa in stato di deplorevole manutenzione, fu trasportata nella Chiesa del Complesso Conventuale il 4 maggio 1875. Oggi il SS. Crocifisso, restaurato, è collocato nella nicchia dell’abside centrale della Chiesa.
