Nei «Sussidi per una corretta presentazione degli ebrei e dell’ebraismo nella predicazione e nella catechesi della Chiesa Cattolica» del 1985 i cristiani sono invitati ad avere una conoscenza più rispettosa ed adeguata del patrimonio comune a cristiani ed ebrei perché tale conoscenza «può aiutare a comprendere meglio alcuni aspetti della vita della Chiesa» (I, 3).

Tale conoscenza riguarda anche il mistero dello Spirito Santo che il Nuovo Testamento e soprattutto la tradizione cristiana professano come la terza Persona della Santa Trinità, consustanziale al Padre e al Figlio e «con il Padre e il Figlio adorato e glorificato» (Simbolo di Nicea-Costantinopoli).
Anche se nelle scritture ebraiche lo Spirito Santo non viene mai presentato come una persona ma come una forza divina capace di trasformare l’essere umano e il mondo, resta comunque il fatto che la teologia pneumatologica cristiana si radica su quella ebraica. Nella predicazione e nella catechesi sarà necessario pertanto richiamare questo legame, sottolineandone gli aspetti principali:

  1. il nome: «Spirito» traduce il termine ebraico «Ruah» che, nel suo senso primario significa soffio, aria, vento. Gesù utilizza proprio l’immagine sensibile del vento per suggerire a Nicodemo la novità trascendente dello Spirito divino in persona (Catechismo della Chiesa Cattolica 691). Lo spirito come irruzione e come trascendenza: operante nella storia ma altro dalla storia, irriducibile alle sue logiche e instauratrice di un’altra logica, quella della responsabilità e dell’amore per l’altro;

  2. la funzione ordinatrice: «In principio Dio creò il cielo e la terra. Ora la terra era informe e deserta e le tenebre ricoprivano l’abisso e lo spirito di Dio aleggiava sulle acque» (Gn 1.1). Sul mondo informe si posa «lo spirito di Dio» e la sua discesa produce il miracolo della creazione: la trasformazione del caos in cosmos, del disordine in ordine;

  3. la funzione vivificante: «il Signore Dio plasmò l’essere umano con polvere del suolo e soffiò nelle sue narici uno spirito di vita e l’essere umano divenne uno spirito vivente» (Gn 2, 7). Sull’essere umano-polvere viene soffiato lo spirito di Dio e, in conseguenza di questo soffio, l’essere umano è trasformato in essere vivente: non più essere animale ma partner con il quale e al quale Dio parla e affida la responsabilità del mondo;

  4. la funzione di guida: «Su di lui si poserà lo spirito del Signore, spirito di sapienza, di intelligenza, spirito di consiglio e di fortezza, spirito di conoscenza e di timore del Signore» (Is 11. 2). Lo spirito di Dio si impadronisce di determinate persone (patriarchi, matriarche, giudici, re, profeti, sapienti, ecc,) e, dotandole di poteri particolari, le abilita alla funzione di guida e di maestri interpreti, nel mondo, della volontà di Dio;

  5. la funzione risanatrice: «Vi darò un cuore nuovo, metterò dentro di voi uno spirito nuovo… Porrò il mio spirito dentro di voi e vi farò vivere secondo i miei statuti e vi farò osservare e mettere in pratica le mie leggi» (Ez 36, 27). Entrando nell’essere umano, lo spirito lo ricrea e lo risana, vincendone il peccato e ricostituendolo partner di Dio nell’alleanza e nell’osservanza della Torah;

  6. la dimensione universale: «Io effonderò il mio spirito sopra ogni uomo e diverranno profeti i vostri figli e le vostre figlie. Anche sopra gli schiavi e sulle schiave, in quei giorni, effonderò il mio spirito» (Gl 3f 1-2). Verrà un giorno in cui tutti gli esseri umani saranno posseduti dallo spirito e questo giorno coinciderà con il giorno messianico;

  7. la festa di Pentecoste «Mentre il giorno di Pentecoste stava per finire… essi [gli apostoli] furono tutti ripieni di Spirito Santo e cominciarono a parlare in altre lingue, come lo spirito dava loro il potere di esprimersi» (At 2 1,4). L’effusione dello Spirito operata dal Risorto coincide con la festa ebraica della Pentecoste che celebra il dono dell’alleanza e della Torah ad Israele. Lo Spirito del Risorto non è cancellazione ma rinnovamento dell’alleanza del Sinai: responsabilità di fronte all’uomo producendo frutti di giustizia e santità nel mondo.

Lo Spirito Santo o lo Spirito di Santità nel pensiero ebraico

L’espressione «Spirito Santo» come tale (sostantivo più aggettivo attributivo) non si trova nel testo biblico ebraico dove il riferimento allo Spirito è sempre accompagnato da un genitivo di appartenenza. È pertanto lo Spirito di Dio (ruah Elohim) nel caso della creazione; Spirito del Signore (ruah Jhwh) nel caso della relazione di Dio con le sue creature. Solo due volte si trova un riferimento alla Santità (ruah qodesh) Spirito di Santità, in cui Santità è sinonimo di Dio (Is. 63,10s., Sal 51,13). Se nella creazione rappresenta la premessa ordinatrice, «la prima rivelazione di Dio al mondo, quasi l’annuncio, il germe delle rivelazioni future» tanto da suggerire nel Targum Neofiti l’interpretazione delle parole «Lo Spirito di Dio si librava» come «uno spirito d’amore da davanti al Signore»; nella vita delle creature si versa su alcuni, trasmette loro «la sua intenzione, la direzione della sua volontà», li investe con particolare intensità (giudici, re) e fa sì che la loro parola diventi parola di profezia e il profeta sia riconosciuto come ish haruah, un uomo dello spirito (Os. 9,7). Ma lo Spirito in determinate circostanze può investire tutti; i versi di Gioele 3,1-2 sono in questo caso i più indicativi (v. appendice). Ezechiele inoltre in 36, 24 a proposito del cuore di pietra e del cuore di carne suggerisce l’impegno dello Spirito nella realizzazione della rivoluzione spirituale, nel desiderio di cambiamento attraverso la teshuvah (pentimento, conversione), che deve portare al compimento dell’«amare il tuo prossimo che è come te». Si potrebbe suggerire pertanto che lo Spirito pur non avendo né corporeità, né materialità è presente nell’intimità delle creature per arricchirle.

Nel pensiero rabbinico si parte dallo Spirito come Spirito di profezia che sarebbe cessato come tale con Aggeo, Zaccaria e Malachia (Yoma 9b), lo si riconosce poi come ispirazione carismatica e sarebbe promesso agli studiosi. La Mishnah ne parla come di qualcosa che può essere raggiunto dall’uomo pio attraverso varie tappe spirituali (v. appendice). Mai nei testi rabbinici si considera lo Spirito come entità separata da Dio, anche se a volte è usato come sinonimo di Dio e intercambiabile con la Shekinah (maestà di Dio presente in mezzo agli uomini e alla natura; l’immanenza).

La filosofia ebraica avvicina lo Spirito alla Shekinah rabbinica (Filone), alla Gloria di Dio (Jehudah HaLevi); mentre Maimonide lo designa come ispirazione dell’Intelletto divino (emanato da Dio sui profeti) e Nahmanide, a proposito di Gn. 2,7 sottolinea «è lo spirito del grande nome, dalla cui bocca viene conoscenza e intelligenza»(Perushe haTorah 1,33).

La Mistica del Hassidismo renano (sec. XII-XIII) si riferisce di nuovo alla Gloria «è il grande splendore che si chiama Shekinah e pertanto identico allo Spirito di Santità dal quale provengono la voce e la parola di Dio». Lo Zohar (I, 15a) mostra che è grazie allo Spirito che il mondo è stato creato, in quanto esso è l’emanazione di questo chiarore punto splendente e primordiale, come già era stato espresso dal filosofo Saadia (sec. IX).

In questo ultimo secolo l’idealismo ritrova lo Spirito assoluto come nome per l’Io assoluto. F. Rosenzweig, riferendosi alla creazione sottolinea «lo spirito covante di Gn 1, 2 come qualcosa che tende alla spersonalizzazione cioè alla maggiore trascendenza». A. Neher lo definisce un principio assoluto di rivelazione. Infine lo Spirito divino è considerato come ciò che rappresenta la inscindibile correlazione fra Dio e l’uomo (Herman Cohen).

APPENDICE (Testi)

Gioele 3,1-2: «E accadrà dopo di questo e Io verserò il mio Spirito su ogni carne e profetizzeranno i vostri figli e le vostre figlie, i vostri anziani avranno sogni profetici, i vostri giovani avranno visioni profetiche, ed anche sugli schiavi e sulle schiave in quei giorni verserò il mio Spirito».

Ezechiele 36, 25-27: «Poi verserò sopra di voi acqua pura e diventerete puri. Io vi purificherò da tutte le vostre impurità e da tutti i vostri atti di idolatria, e vi darò un cuore nuovo metterò in voi uno spirito nuovo, toglierò dal vostro corpo il cuore di pietra e vi darò un cuore di carne, metterò in voi il mio Spirito».

Mishnah, Sota 9,15: «R. Pinehas ben Jair diceva: La diligenza porta all’innocenza; l’innocenza porta alla castità; la castità porta all’astinenza; l’astinenza porta alla purità; la purità conduce all’umiltà; l’umiltà conduce al timore del peccato; il timore del peccato conduce alla pietà; la pietà conduce al santo spirito (ruah haqodesh) e il Santo Spirito ci rende degni della resurrezione dei morti, la quale resurrezione dei morti si compirà a mezzo di Elia».

Talmud, Pesahim 117a: «Il titolo Per David un salmo ci insegna che David s’è messo a dire il salmo e la Presenza divina s’è subito posata su lui. Ciò prova che la Presenza divina non si manifesta quando ci lasciamo andare o alla tristezza o alla frivolezza o alle parole futili, ma solo grazie alla gioia che si mette nel compiere un comandamento come è detto in II Re 3,15: “E mentre il sonatore toccava le corde, la mano del Signore (cioè lo Spirito profetico) si posò su di lui”».
